Donald Trump sent tariff letters to eight countries notifying them that the U.S. will implement its tariff plan if a trade deal isn't secured.

Donald Trump vocally defended former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro as the Brazilian politician was accused of attempting to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election. Trump threatened to place a 50% levy on Brazilian goods in defense of his long-term ally. "The way that Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, a Highly Respected Leader throughout the World during his Term, including by the United States, is an international disgrace," Trump told the current Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. "This Trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end 'IMMEDIATELY!"

Aside from Brazil, Donald Trump informed the Philippines that they're at risk of being hit with a 20% tariff rate. Brunei and Moldova face a 25% rate. Algeria, Iraq, Libya and Sri Lanka are looking at a 30% rate if they don't come to an agreement. "It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our Trading Relationship," Trump started each letter.

If Donald Trump and the eight nations don't negotiate deals, the tariffs will be implemented on Friday, August 1. "Please understand, that these Tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, causing these unsustainable Trade Deficits against the United States," the president continued. "This [trade] Deficit is a major threat to our Economy and, indeed, our National Security," he added.

On Monday, July 7, Donal Trump warned Japan, Tunisia, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and South Korea that they face a 25% tariff. Bangladesh and Serbia will see a 35% tariff. Bosnia, South Africa and Herzegovina face a 30% tariff. Cambodia's rate is 36%. Indonesia's rate is 32%. Laos and Myanmar will see a 40% tariff, and Thailand faces a 36% tariff. "They will take the letters seriously because they have taken the president seriously," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. "That's why the president's phone, I can tell you, rings off the hook from world leaders all the time who are begging him to come to a deal."

In his letters, Donald Trump informed countries that the tariffs are subject to change as they "may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country." Added the former reality star, "You will never be disappointed with The United States of America."

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the ongoing agreements in an interview. "We are close to several deals. As always, there's a lot of foot-dragging on the other side, and so I would expect to see several big announcements over the next couple of days," Bessent said on Sunday, July 6, while appearing on CNN's State of the Union.
