Mickey Carroll, May 7, age 89: Carroll gained stardom when he played the Munchkins' town crier in "The Wizard of Oz." Carroll had been a contract player at MGM and reportedly was recommended for the job by fellow MGM contractor and "Oz" star Judy Garland. Though he abandoned his film career in the '40s, realizing the roles he would be offered would be limited because of his height, he joined several of the surviving Munchkins from the film for the dedication of their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007. He moved back to his native Missouri, where he worked in his family's gravestone business but also was gracious in granting many interviews annually to fans of "Oz."
