After snagging a Russian passport -- and the ability to avoid sharing his big, fat paychecks with French social welfare programs -- Gerard Depardieu hightailed his way to chilly Mordovia, "the Gateway to Siberia," where his Hollywood-ness was lauded by some women dressed in traditional folk garb who, quite literally, sang his praises.
Following their performance, Depardieu -- who, by the way, was a no-show in French court Tuesday, where he was expected to face a DUI charge -- was more or less offered the position of minister of culture of Siberia.
"If Mr. Depardieu desires it, he may be offered the post," said Vladimir Volkov, the acting head of Mordovia. But according to a high-ranking official at the Russian film archives, Depardieu declined the offer, saying the actor said he was already "the culture minister of the world."
