The new period drama "The New Look" — which is named after Christian Dior's famed late-1940s design aesthetic — tells the story of Dior and fellow fashion designer Coco Chanel set against the backdrop of World War II as they navigated the horrors of Nazi occupation of France and launched modern fashion.
The 10-episode Apple TV+ series, which was filmed in Paris and debuted on the streamer in February, is inspired by true events and also features storylines involving some of their contemporaries, friends and rivals including Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Lucien Lelong and more.
"Set against the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris, 'The New Look' focuses on the pivotal moment in the 20th century when the French city led the world back to life through its fashion icon Christian Dior," Apple TV+ explains. "As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel's reign as the world's most famous fashion designer is put into jeopardy." The series — which also chronicles Christian's efforts to help his sister, Catherine Dior — a member of the French resistance who's caught and transported to a concentration camp — "provides a stunning view into the atelier, designs and clothing created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior," Apple TV+ adds.
The project stars a wealth of lauded performers including Ben Mendelsohn, Juliette Binoche, John Malkovich, Maisie Williams, Glenn Close and more.
