Number 1 Was 'Unexpected'
The State of Louisiana is known for many of America's most culturally diverse and exciting traditions, like Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but the Bayou State features some of the country's most dangerous highways. With a population of 4,590,241, Louisiana's urban interstate crashes ranked 1.81 per 100,000 residents, making it the most dangerous out of America's 50 states. Thankfully, a city like New Orleans doesn't require a vehicle to experience all it has to offer.
2 – 5: Driving Not as Safe as It Seems in These 'Laidback' States
Arkansas, Connecticut, Missouri and Tennessee round out the top five when it comes to hazardous roads. Each of these states earned its ranking due to factors like weather-related hazards, rural road conditions and distracted driving incidents.
The Volunteer State featured a whopping 106 urban interstate road crashes in 2022 alone.
6 – 10: What's Going on in New Mexico?
Alaska, Texas, Georgia, New Mexico and Delaware round out the top 10, respectively, with the Land of Enchantment's highways showing up as a "surprise" for many.Experts cite poor lighting, wide rural road networks and minimal pedestrian infrastructure in cities like Albuquerque as major risk factors. Advocacy groups have called for urgent infrastructure investment and stronger enforcement of traffic laws.
Take Extra Precautions When Driving in Alaska
