Maddow began before slamming National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard for sharing a "bizarre" video accusing the world's elite of wanting a nuclear war. Following Donald Trump's airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, June 21, fear of retaliation spread throughout the nation. Prior to the airstrikes, several attacks have occurred on American soil — including the assassination of a Minnesota state representative and her husband. "How do you prepare us as a country?" Rachel Maddow asked. "Well, again, it depends on who is running the U.S. government. … It's not like domestic counterterrorism is a niche concern in America right now."

Rachel Maddow later hinted at Donald Trump leaning on unqualified people to lead essential national security and law enforcement agencies: "From the [Director of National Intelligence] to the decimation of the Justice Department and particularly the FBI, which is now led at the director and deputy director levels by two right-wing podcasters [Kash Patel and Dan Bongino], to the Department of Homeland Security, where a lawn boy and Model U.N. kid [Thomas Fugate] has been
appointed to lead counterterrorism [efforts] … in every element of its responsibility to keep the American people safe, the U.S. government under Donald Trump is, I guess, doing the best they're capable of," she griped, emphasizing "this is the best they can do."
