Before Donald Trump's trip to the military alliance's annual summit at The Hague, he made the texts from Mark Rutte public: "Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do. It makes us all safer," the NATO leader — who's been called the "Trump Whisperer" due to his ability to pacify the often volatile politician — said in the messages, adding that Trump would be "flying into another big success in The Hague this evening." Continued Rutte, "It was not easy but we've got them all signed onto five percent! Donald, you have driven us to a really, really important moment for America and Europe and the world. You will achieve something NO American president in decades could get done. … Europe is going to pay in a BIG way, as they should, and it will be your win. Safe travels and see you at His Majesty's dinner!"

The White House confirmed the correspondence between Donald Trump and Mark Rutte was authentic and "transmitted through staff on a government device." The former Dutch prime minister released a statement to the press addressing Trump's decision to share the texts: "I have absolutely no trouble or problem with that because there's nothing in it which had to stay secret," he said.

Despite Donald Trump and Mark Rutte having a friendly dynamic, the businessman doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the idea of NATO as a whole. When questioned about whether the U.S. would help any of the 32 NATO members defend themselves if they're attacked — a requirement that's made clear in Article 5 of the alliance's charter — Trump remained elusive: "Depends on your definition of [Article 5]," he said. "There's numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, right? But I'm committed to being their friends. You know, I've become friends with many of those leaders, and I'm committed to helping them."
