On Juneteenth, President Donald Trump took to social media to call out the growing number of holidays, arguing they're costing the country billions of dollars: "Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don't want it either! Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once [sic] working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he
wrote. (For context, Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.)

Former President Joe Biden called for Juneteenth to become a national holiday during his 2020 campaign — and later signed it into law as a federal holiday. At the time, many states already recognized the day, including Texas, which became the first to make it a paid holiday in 1980.

President Donald Trumps' comments come amid ongoing criticism of his administration's efforts to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government. The Pentagon, for example, reportedly deleted web pages honoring Black pioneers such as Jackie Robinson and the Tuskegee Airmen to align with Trump's new DEI guidelines. After receiving public backlash, those pages were quickly restored.

Despite President Trump's latest stance, he has previously tried to take credit for popularizing Juneteenth: "I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous." Trump said to the
Wall Street Journal. "It's actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it."
