On Tuesday, July 1, the Senate set a new record for the most votes taken during a "vote-a-rama" session considering President
Donald Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill. In the early morning hours, the Senate cast its 45th vote on an amendment or procedural motion tied to the bill, surpassing the previous record of 44 votes set during budget resolution voting in 2008.

The record-breaking vote came with Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen's amendment, which sought to remove a $100 million allocation for the Office of Management and Budget from the bill. Although Van Hollen's amendment broke the record, it failed to pass, ending in a 50-50 tie. Out of all the amendments proposed during the session, only around six were approved. Despite this, President Donald Trump's bill ultimately passed the Senate by noon, narrowly winning 51-50, with J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.

One point of contention was a proposed 10-year embargo on states regulating artificial intelligence. Several House members, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, strongly opposed it, and Senator Marsha Blackburn suggested it could be a dealbreaker for her support. After much debate and failed attempts at compromise, the language was completely removed from the bill. The amendment passed overwhelmingly, with 99 senators voting in favor.

Other notable amendments were also proposed but failed to pass. One sought to cut Medicaid funding for undocumented immigrants. Another aimed to increase taxes on individuals earning more than $25 million to 39.6%. It intended to double the rural hospital fund in the bill to $50 billion. Senator Mike Lee also tried to remove wind and solar tax credits from the bill but was unsuccessful.
