Virginia Giuffre accused Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of assault, and her posthumous memoir led to the allegations resurfacing. Since the book's release, Mountbatten Windsor was stripped of his title, dukedom and estate.
"His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

"These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him," the statement continued. "Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse."

The royal family has a history of removing titles — King George V took away the royal distinction from relatives who sided with Germany during World War I.

The Titles Deprivation Act 1917 was used to strip the titles from Leopold Charles, Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence and Baron Arklow; Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, Earl of Armagh; Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland; and Henry, Viscount Taaffe of Corren and Baron of Ballymote.
