Day five. After months of investigation and interviews, the House of Representatives' Jan. 6 committee is holding public hearings to detail the events of that day — a day in which a violent mob descended on the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election. As part of the hearings, witnesses are revealing what happened and speaking about what they experienced in Washington, D.C., that day. Graphic never-before-seen footage of the incidents was shown early on. One particularly notable moment came during a video excerpt from Ivanka Trump's testimony in which she said she accepted the results of the election — that Joe Biden won the presidency and her father, Donald Trump, lost. On June 28, Cassidy Hutchinson — former aide to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows — testified that Trump tried to strangle a Secret Service member and wanted armed supporters to be closer to his pre-riot speech. He also reportedly threw a dish in rage, splattering ketchup on a wall. During and after the hearings, many in Hollywood took to social media to voice their opinions. Rosie O'Donnell tweeted, "Cassidy Hutchinson – white house aide 25yrs old!!! – here we go…"

"I hardly know who this person, Cassidy Hutchinson, is, other than I heard very negative things about her (a total phony and leaker), and when she requested to go with certain others of the team to Florida after my having served a full term in office, I personally turned her request down. Why did she want to go with us if she felt we were so terrible? I understand that she was very upset and angry that I didn't want her to go, or be a member of the team. She is bad news!" –Donald Trump wrote as the June 28 hearing aired. "Her Fake story that I tried to grab the steering wheel of the White House Limousine in order to steer it to the Capitol Building is 'sick' and fraudulent, very much like the Unselect Committee itself — Wouldn't even have been possible to do such a ridiculous thing. Her story of me throwing food is also false… and why would SHE have to clean it up, I hardly knew who she even was?"

Maria Shriver live-tweeted throughout some of the hearings. On June 28, she tweeted, "President Trump was aware that those in the crowd on January 6th had weapons including AR-15s and instructed the crowd to march down to the Capitol… Ms. Hutchinson explains that former President Trump was expecting to go to the Capitol on January 6th, but was told there were not enough assets to take him there, which resulted in him becoming 'irate.'" She previously wrote about other hearings. "Vice Chair Liz Cheney asks us to look at the evidence. Don't be distracted by our politics. Let's see the truth from these @January6thCmte hearings as it is," Maria tweeted on June 21. "Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers says he responded to Trump's requests to replace electors: 'You are asking me to do something against my oath, and I will not break my oath.'" During previous hearings, she said, "Everyone who loves this country should be horrified by what this January 6th Hearing is unveiling." She added, "It is fascinating to hear from rioters themselves saying they felt called by the President, they felt invited by him." Maria also previously had high praises for committee co-chair Liz Cheney, tweeting, "Wyoming, you should be so proud of your Congresswoman!"

"Most damning? #DeWormedBannon testifying under oath that Trump never cared whether he actually won. He told Barr he didn't care, he was going declare his victory anyway. That alone proves his complicity and guilt in everything that transpired after," Yvette Nicole Brown tweeted after the initial hearing. On June 28, she told Cassidy Hutchinson to "push thru," adding, "she knows things." Of Trump, Yvette wrote, "He knew they were armed and angry. He riled them up further & then SENT them to do his bidding inside that building. #Evil."

Back on Dec. 1, 2020, Dan Rather tweeted, "Why is the Trump White House suddenly a very polite place to work? Everyone's going around saying 'pardon me.'" On June 16, he replied to his own tweet, writing, "Apparently those who plotted the insurrection are also very polite." Not mincing words, the legendary newsman previously tweeted, "Even if we already know most of what we are hearing, the horror remains just as palpable and present… The truth is damning." After June 28, the newsman tweeeted, "Mark Meadows may have more exposure than a nudist swimming in an aquarium tank."

"For those of you not following the hearing, here's what's new: Trump knew the Jan 6 crowd was heavily armed. He insisted the metal detectors be removed so their weapons wouldn't be confiscated. He instructed them to go to the Capitol & said 'they're not going to hurt me.' Probably the image from today that will follow Trump until the end of time is him shouting 'I'm the f****** President' & strangling a Secret Service agent. But legally I'm not sure that's as consequential as him knowingly sending an armed mob to the Capitol," James Gunn tweeted on June 28. He previously wrote, "For Trump supporters out there who have accused Twitter of censorship for kicking off Trump for breaking the TOS, how are you reacting now to Trump's Truth Social currently banning people for merely bringing up the #January6thCommitteeHearings?"

"All the major networks are airing the hearings but Fox News isn't. Instead they're showing reruns of Jan. 6 with a laugh track," late night host Jimmy Fallon said after the first day of hearings. After the second day, he said, "Today every major network covered the hearing, even Fox News. They were like, might as well, all of our anchors are in it anyway… For the first hearing on Thursday, over 20 million people tuned in, which is higher than this year's NBA Finals. Trump was torn. He didn't know whether to worry about the hearing or brag about the ratings."

"Popcorn shares are through the roof! #January6thCommitteeHearings… People are being banned on Truth social for talking about 1/6. They are being banned for the same reason our Capitol was attacked. It ALL boils down to Trumps fragile ego," Patricia Arquette tweeted. She later commented on the committee claiming several Republican congressmen called then-President Donald Trump asking for pardons. "It's almost as if they knew insurrection was a crime," she wrote. On June 17, she added, "The Capitol of The United States of America was attacked. The mob intended on hanging the Republican Vice President and murder our elected leaders and Trump did nothing stop it for hours."

"All the lawyers knew that overturning the election was a crime. They all told each other that they knew it was a crime. They all told everyone in the White House that it was a crime, including the President. They told him, 'Sir, it's a crime.' He said, 'Thank you for clearing that up, now let's go do that crime,'" late night host Stephen Colbert said on June 16. In later speaking about Donald Trump's team agreeing that past vice presidents didn't have the power to overturn elections, Stephen said, "It's just a classic case of 'Do as I say, not as I coup.'" A few days before, after the first hearing, he tweeted, "Before you decide if the former president is responsible for the Capitol riots, remember that in America you're innocent until proven guilty, then proven guilty again, then proven guilty again and they hold a hearing in primetime to show everyone how you're really, really guilty."

"This story gets crazier with each time. It really should be called 'They Did What-ergate?' because we learned today that Trump knew what he was trying to do was illegal and ― you're not going to believe this ― he went ahead and did it anyway. So it was the third of what will be six hearings, and they're so dramatic, it's hard to believe it isn't scripted," late night host Jimmy Kimmel said on June 16 before setting footage of the hearings to the title theme from HBO's "Succession." Jimmy quipped, "Now, of course, the difference between Logan Roy and Donald Trump is Logan actually gave his son a birthday card, and Eric's never had that." He went on to note, "Trump was on Truth Social to scream 'I demand equal time.' I don't know about you. I like that idea. I would love to watch Trump vs. Liz Cheney. He hasn't been spanked by a woman in quite some time."

In referring to Donald Trump's hope that then-Vice President Mike Pence could and should overturn the election results, late night host Seth Meyers said on June 16, "Trump knew it was illegal, even his own pro-coup lawyer admitted it was illegal, and he still tried to threaten and coerce Pence into doing it to the point where he sicced a violent mob on Pence to get him to go it. I'm no lawyer, but how is that not an indictable offense?"

"Todays Jan6th Commission looks to be focusing on the Trump administrations targeting of Pence in the last weeks of 2020. 'What the President wanted Mike Pence to do was not only wrong, it was illegal and unconstitutional.' Conspiracy charges should be brought. Trump knew what he was doing was against the Electoral Count Act. He knew it was illegal. Liz Cheney closes with accusations of Trump's dereliction of duty, which is also a criminal offense… Cheney brings the fraudulent Electors created by GOP statehouses in 7 states into the seditious conspiracy. Accomplices all of them. They didn't want Pence to contest the electors allowing Congress to chose the President because no candidate reached the required electoral votes, they wanted Pence to RECOGNIZE those electors and declare Trump the election winner." –Ethan Embry, while watching the June 16 hearing
_
"January 6th was a terrorist attack what are we even doing?" Patton Oswalt tweeted after the first public hearing aired on June 9.
