In his victory speech on Sunday, March 9, Mark Carney praised Canadians after President Donald Trump said he wanted to make the nation an American territory."We have made this the greatest country in the world and now our neighbors want to take us. No way," the Canadian politician said.
He later shared that Americans "want our resources, water, our land, our country."

In addition to threatening to acquire the country, President Donald Trump also instituted an additional 25% tax on Canadian goods."Donald Trump, as we know, has put, as the prime minister just said, unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we make a living," Mark Carney said.
"He's attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses, and we cannot let him succeed. And we won't," the politician stressed. "We won't. I am proud. I am proud of the response of Canadians who are making their voices heard and their wallets felt. I am grateful for how our provinces are stepping up to the fight."

President Donald Trump sees value in Canada becoming a part of the U.S., but his desire to expand American territory wasn't well received by the country's leaders."If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100% certain that they'd become a state," Trump said, according to PBS.

President Donald Trump believes making Canada a state would benefit the American economy."I think Canada would be much better off being the 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada. And I'm not going to let that happen," the former reality star said in an interview with Fox News.
"Why are we paying $200 billion a year, essentially a subsidy to Canada?" he asked.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a firm stance against President Donald Trump's vision."Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing," Trudeau said, according to CBC.
"They're very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those," he continued.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn't avoid discussing the trade war between Canada and the U.S. in his farewell speech."We're a country that celebrates the right of each and every person to be who they want to be, to pray as they pray, and love who they love," he said. "We're a country that will always defend a woman's right to choose. We're a country that will be diplomatic when we can but fight when we must, elbows up."
