Schumer Sounds the Alarm on Tariff Impact
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a sharp warning on Monday, April 7, criticizing President Donald Trump's escalating tariff policies and their potential consequences for New York City, the New York Post reported. 
Speaking publicly, the Democratic lawmaker cautioned that the city's economy could take a nearly $20 billion blow if the White House continues down its current trade path. 
"President Trump's pinball tariff strategy will wreak total havoc on New York City and is likely to drive us right into a recession," Schumer said. "We've crunched the numbers, and what doesn't look good for the nation, looks far worse for New York City."

Jobs and Core Sectors at Risk
Chuck Schumer argued that Donald Trump's sweeping tariff measures will jeopardize some of the city's most vital industries. 
"Some of the Big Apple's core sectors are being targeted already, New Yorkers face roughly $20 billion dollars in increased costs, and a staggering 260,000 New York jobs are under threat, unless Donald Trump backs off," he warned. 
He further emphasized the severity of the situation by urging, "Back off, President Trump. What you're doing is ugly. Ugly for New York and ugly for the nation."
New York City's Vulnerability
Chuck Schumer argued that due to its status as a global financial and trade hub, New York is especially exposed to the ripple effects of tariffs. 
He cited JPMorgan's forecast of a 60 percent chance the U.S. will face a recession this year, suggesting the risk is even greater for the city. Industries like finance, tech, accounting, fashion and tourism could all face setbacks, he said. 
The senator also noted growing international backlash: "The market continues to crash. Millions of New Yorkers who put money in their retirement accounts are seeing the market down to 10 percent since so-called 'Liberation Day'. People don't feel very liberated," Schumer said. "Now Trump tariffs are likely to drive New York right into a recession, and it's going to be worse for New York City and its suburbs."
'Put Down the Golf Clubs'
Chuck Schumer didn't hold back in addressing Donald Trump directly. He criticized the president's approach to leadership during a critical moment for the economy. 
"Put down the golf clubs and pick up the papers and have a look at what is going on because it is anything but 'great,'" Schumer said.
Trump Defends Tariffs Amid Economic Fears
Despite growing criticism and market instability, President Donald Trump has stood firm in defense of his trade strategy. 
Also on Monday, as recession concerns intensified and markets declined, he posted on Truth Social, "Be Strong, Courageous, and Patient, and GREATNESS will be the result!" 
The administration recently announced a sweeping 10 percent base tariff on all imports, along with steeper levies on select goods from key trade partners. Items like high-end Italian coffee, Japanese whiskey and Asian-manufactured athletic gear are among those targeted. 
Trump has continued to argue that the new "reciprocal" tariffs will offset foreign trade barriers and strengthen domestic manufacturing.

Jon Stewart was appalled by Donald Trump's social media antics.
"Panican?" Stewart said on The Daily Show after reading the president's social media post. "The genius who gave us classics like 'Sleepy Joe' and 'Crooked Hillary' just s**** out 'you're a Panican'?"

Trump Rejects EU's 'Zero-for-Zero' Trade Proposal
On Monday, April 7, President Donald Trump declined a European Union proposal for eliminating tariffs on industrial goods, asserting the offer did not address the broader imbalance in trade, the New York Post reported.
"The EU has been very tough over the years," Trump said from the Oval Office. "It was formed to really do damage to the United States in trade." 
Trump went on to criticize the EU for its limited acceptance of U.S. goods: "They don't take our cars, like Japan in that sense. They don't take our agricultural product; they don't take anything practically."

Trade Deficit and Energy Exports at Center of Dispute
Donald Trump argued the U.S. runs a large trade deficit with the European Union and called for energy purchases as a remedy. 
"We have a [trade] deficit with the European Union of $350 billion — and it's going to disappear fast," he said. "And one of the ways that that can disappear easily and quickly is they're going to have to buy our energy from us." 
When asked by a reporter if his newly imposed tariffs were a negotiation tactic, Trump replied, "We're not looking at that. We have very many countries that are coming to negotiate deals with us. And they're going to be fair deals. In certain cases, they're going to be paying substantial tariffs."
European Officials Promote Free Trade and Prepare for Countermeasures
EU leaders responded to Donald Trump's tariffs by reaffirming their openness to negotiation — while warning of possible retaliation. 
"We have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods as we have successfully done with many other trading partners," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "Because Europe is always ready for a good deal. So we keep it on the table," she said during a press event with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. 
Von der Leyen continued, "We stand ready to negotiate with the U.S. We are also prepared to respond through countermeasures and defend our interests."
Tariffs Trigger Market Volatility and Political Tension
Donald Trump's decision to move forward with a 10 percent global baseline tariff — plus elevated duties on specific imports — sparked turbulence in financial markets. 
The STOXX Europe 600 index dropped 6 percent on Monday before partially recovering. 
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said that talks with the U.S. had begun earlier in February: "Right now we are in the early stages of discussions, because the U.S. views tariffs not as a tactical step, but as a corrective measure," he said.
Meanwhile, the White House has already levied 25 percent tariffs on foreign-made cars and metals, with more set to begin on Wednesday, April 9.
Musk Weighs In
DOGE head and "First Bro" Elon Musk recently expressed cautious optimism about U.S.–EU relations: "I hope that the United States and Europe can establish a very close partnership, effectively creating a free-trade zone between Europe and North America," he said.
He added he was "hopeful" about a zero-tariff outcome. Such a deal nearly materialized under former President Barack Obama through the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, but negotiations collapsed in 2016 after Greenpeace leaked details, raising concerns over food safety regulations and environmental protections. 
Talks officially ended in 2019 during Donald Trump's first term.

Tom Homan Voices Frustration Over Deportation Progress
At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in late February, White House border advisor Tom Homan expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump's second term. Not much has changed in the six weeks since then.
In an interview with Semafor on Monday, April 7, Homan's tone suggested growing impatience with Capitol Hill. 
"I support any approach that gives us the money we need to do this operation," he said. He then added bluntly, "Is it taking too long? Yes, it's taking too long. I wish they would have passed [a budget resolution] by now." 
His comments reflect the broader gridlock affecting not just immigration policy but the overall functioning of the Donald Trump administration's legislative goals for 2025.

"We've got to have Congress fund this operation," Tom Homan told Semafor in early April. Speaking to National Review in late February, Homan stated, "I'm not happy with the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests so far."
He clarified, "Let me rephrase: I'm happy that we got the arrests we have, but I want more." 
The border "czar" made clear that his expectations remain high for ramping up deportations as Trump continues to pursue his immigration agenda.
Funding as a Barrier to Action

Tom Homan was candid about the challenges his team faces without sufficient resources. He emphasized that expanded enforcement depends heavily on budgetary support from Congress. 
"If we get more money, we do more," he told National Review.
The delay in funding, he later suggested, was holding back progress. As part of the broader budget reconciliation debate in Congress, additional border security funding is in limbo, therefore putting strain on efforts to escalate deportations and immigration enforcement operations.
Congressional Disagreements Stall Budget Progress
The delay in advancing border enforcement funds is largely tied to partisan disagreement over the budget resolution needed to unlock reconciliation. Internal conflict within the Republican Party — especially between House fiscal conservatives and Senate leadership — has further slowed the process. 
Disputes over President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign tax proposals and skepticism from deficit hawks regarding spending levels continue to hold up any formal agreement. Without a resolution in place, lawmakers cannot use reconciliation to bypass Senate filibusters and pass border-related funding with a simple majority.

According to University of Chicago Booth School of Business economist Brent Neiman — who co-wrote the academic work that the commander-in-chief used to legitimatize his newly implemented taxes on goods from outside the country — the right-wing administration interpreted the numbers all wrong.

During a ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House on Wednesday, April 2, Donald Trump held up a poster that highlighted how the tariffs would be "charged" to America as well as the "discounted" tariffs the U.S. would implement in response.
"Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years," the Republican leader declared during the gathering. "But it is not going to happen anymore."

Despite Donald Trump looking like he had all of the concrete data, one of the men who crunched the numbers, Brent Neiman, was startled by how the president used the research.
"They got it all wrong. My immediate thought was 'Gosh, how could those numbers be so high?'" the economist wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times on Monday, April 7.

According to Brent Neiman, the numbers Donald Trump cited are not tariffs against America but rather a calculation of the trade deficits between the U.S. and other countries.
"I think they grabbed the wrong number from our research. The one that I would use from my own research and plug into their equation is actually four times larger than the number they used and as a result, the deficits they calculated are four times larger than I think they should have got," he explained. "The last thing I wanted was my work to be described as leading to these policies, which I think are really bad for Americans."

Northwestern University economist Martin Eichenbaum also backed up Brent Neiman's claim that the research was misinterpreted by Donald Trump and his administration.
"We trade both in goods and services, and apparently they only use goods and that makes a huge difference, because we export a lot of services, like finance, entertainment, health, universities, right?" he said, according to ABC7 Chicago.

Kudlow Challenges Trade Deficit Logic on Air
During a Monday, April 7, segment on Fox Business, host Larry Kudlow offered a pointed critique of the Donald Trump administration's trade strategy while interviewing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, The Daily Beast reported.
Kudlow raised concerns about the administration's heavy reliance on trade deficits to justify its new "reciprocal tariffs" policy. Referring to a prior interview, he said, "I don't know if you heard [Arthur] Laffer in the prior interview, but Art doesn't believe that the trade deficit should be a metric. I don't really either." 
"Mr. Secretary, if you get the tax cuts — and I guess you're well on the way — you get your deregulation, these are all huge pro-growth items. The United States will grow faster than Japan. We will grow faster than almost anybody. Therefore, almost by definition, by growing faster than the rest of the world, we're always going to have a trade deficit," he continued.

Kudlow Pushes Back on Tariff Calculations
Larry Kudlow argued that using the trade deficit as a central figure in setting tariffs may not be wise, given how fast-growing economies often run deficits. "So I don't know why you'd want to use the trade deficit in a calculation for a reciprocal charge," he said. 
He later pressed further, asking, "To apply this to the whole world on the basis of trade deficits, is that really the best, in your judgment? You've been around a long time, you've looked at these, you've done analysis. Is that really where we should be at?"
The second Donald Trump administration has reportedly used a formula centered around trade deficits to determine the size of new tariffs, dividing a country's deficit with the U.S. by its exports and then halving it. This method has drawn bipartisan criticism from economists and policy experts.
Bessent Defends the Administration's Economic Framework
In response, Scott Bessent defended the logic behind the administration's policies, attributing trade deficits to multiple economic factors. "A trade deficit is the result of three things: The 'terms of trades,' the 'budget deficit' and the 'level of the dollar,'" he explained. 
He emphasized that "we want a strong dollar," and claimed that bringing down the budget deficit could positively impact trade imbalances. He also pointed to "trade barriers" as a key issue.
"The real problem has been these barriers because what we are going to create in the U.S. through lower taxes, energy dominance and our deregulation, our rule of law is going to be we are the best place in the world to do business," Bessent said. 
He concluded with optimism: "And we will continue to attract more and more industry here when these barriers come down. I am highly confident of that."
Trump Sends Mixed Signals on Tariff Permanence
While Scott Bessent described the tariffs as a negotiation tactic aimed at removing trade obstacles, President Donald Trump suggested a less flexible approach during a press event the same day. 
When asked about the administration's conflicting statements, Trump replied, "They could both be true." He elaborated, "There could be permanent tariffs and there could also be negotiations, because there are things that we need beyond tariffs." 
Trump noted that "tariffs are very important," but emphasized that other tools are also in play when dealing with trade partners.
'We're Gonna Get Fair Deals'
Reaffirming his hardline approach, Donald Trump said the U.S. was prepared to walk away from unfavorable relationships altogether. "We're gonna get fair deals and good deals with every country, and if we don't, we're gonna have nothing to do with them and they're not gonna be allowed to participate in the United States." 
His comments reflect an ongoing tension within the administration between using tariffs as leverage and potentially making them permanent policy tools.

As the United States economy continues to be rattled by President Donald Trump's tariffs, Navarro, a member of his administration, made a Monday, April 7, appearance on Fox News' Ingraham Angle where he stayed firm on his belief that the country won't be put into financial ruin over the newly imposed duties.

Despite the stock market being in free fall, Peter Navarro told Laura Ingraham, "It's finding a bottom now."
"But look, here's the thing, it's going to shift over and it's going to be companies in the S&P 500 who are the first to produce here," he explained. "Those are the ones going to lead to recovery and it's going to happen. Dow: 50,000, I guarantee that and I guarantee no recession."

Peter Navarro claimed he feels good about the economy with Donald Trump's tariffs in place because he believes Congress would pass the commander-in-chief's economic plan. The agenda will reportedly get rid of taxes on tipped wages, overtime pay and extend tax cuts authorized during Trump's first term.

"Why? Because when we pass the biggest, broadest tax cut in history, within a matter of months, that's going to be a great stimulus," Navarro said. "There's not going to be any inflation. We've already had a significant drop, a huge drop in oil prices. That's like a point off the [inflation index]. We're going to have lower yields and mortgage [rates]."

While Donald Trump continues to stay loyal to his bold economic plan, many business executives aren't confident about where the country is headed.
"Most CEOs I talk to would say we are probably in a recession right now," BlackRock CEO Larry Fink told the Economic Club of New York on Monday, April 7.

While Wall Street may be anxiety-ridden, Donald Trump has continuously boasted about the tariffs and why he feels they will bring inflation down.
"Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something," the Republican leader claimed in a Sunday, April 6, Truth Social post. "We have been treated so badly by other countries because we had stupid leadership that allowed this to happen. They took our business, they took our money, they took our jobs."

Kristi Noem Dodges Kicks During ICE Raid

Kristi Noem was in the line of fire while leading an ICE raid in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday, April 8.
According to the New York Post, the secretary of homeland security donned police tactical gear — and her infamous Rolex — to lead about 100 federal agents as they apprehended three illegal immigrants wanted on charges ranging from weapons and drug offenses to money laundering.
At one point, a suspect wearing Crocs foam clogs attempted to kick Noem, who dodged the attack.
"You're not scaring me with your Croc," the former governor of South Dakota told him.

According to the New York Post, Kristi Noem's team arrested a Crocs-clad illegal immigrant with ties to a money service business suspected of illegally sending funds to Mexican cartels involved in drug smuggling and human trafficking. After he was cuffed and loaded into the back of a police car, the former governor of South Dakota attempted to question him about his family, prompting him to raise his foot to block her.
"You're gonna go home, and you're gonna get prosecuted. … You're not scaring me with your Croc," Noem told him as he repeatedly kicked toward her.

According to the New York Post, Kristi Noem's team also picked up an illegal immigrant with ties to the 18th Street Gang who was wanted for felony narcotics charges dating back to the late '80s and flagged for deportation twice over the years.
As police took him away in handcuffs, he reportedly told The Post that he's a grandfather now and is no longer affiliated with the gang.
When he told Noem that he hopes his three children follow a different path, she fired back, "Go deal with the consequences of breaking the law here. Give them an example of being a better person."

Kristi Noem's task force also arrested an illegal immigrant from Mexico with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel whom an immigration official first flagged for deportation in 2008. He reportedly has prior convictions for aggravated assault, weapons charges and an active arrest warrant for homicide in Mexico.

According to the New York Post, the multi-agency task force spearheaded by Kristi Noem apprehended three felons with extensive criminal histories in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday, April 8. The task force included FBI, DEA, Homeland Security and Phoenix ICE agents. Former Donald Trump campaign manager and advisor Corey Lewandowski — who's now a Department of Homeland Security advisor and special government employee — was also on hand.
"The effort of cooperation we have between agencies is getting turned onto steroids. Kristi Noem shared her firm stance on illegal immigration during an interview with the New York Post: "Everyone in this country illegally now, it's a criminal charge. Everyone should know we're enforcing the [Alien Registration Act]. If you've been here longer than 30 days and haven't registered with the government, we are now coming after you criminally," she said.
"That means we can come into your home and get you, charge you and remove you, and the fines are up to $1,000 a day," she continued, adding that "American citizens are the only ones afforded the rights of being in this country" and that "everybody else is going to pay consequences for breaking our laws."
"We're going to continue using that act in order to return people from these terrorist organizations to face consequences and be removed from our country," she noted. "You'll see us continuing to partner with El Salvador. CECOT has the capacity for 40,000 individuals, and [El Salvador President Nayib Bukele] has said they'll take as many as we want to send. There's 14,000 there now, and he said he plans to build another prison right next to it."

In an April 2 press conference at the White House, Donald Trump announced his plan to place additional taxes on goods imported from foreign countries, but skeptics noticed the uninhabited Heard Island and McDonald Islands were included on the list of affected countries.
"The idea is that there are no countries left off [the list]," Howard Lutnick told CBS's Face the Nation while discussing the president's plan.

"What happens is, if you leave anything off the list, the countries that try to basically arbitrage America go through those countries to us,'' Howard Lutnick claimed.
"Any country. Like, we had tariffs — the president put tariffs on China, right, in 2018 — and then what China started doing is they started going through other countries to America,'' Lutnick continued

Howard Lutnick later insinuated that foreign nations are exploiting the United States' resources.
"They just built through other countries, through America. And so the president knows that, he's tired of it, and he's going to fix that," the commerce chief said.
"So basically he said, 'Look, I can't let any part of the world be a place where China or other countries can ship through them,'" he explained.

Despite Donald Trump's confidence in his new tariffs, economists have warned that the plan could lead to a recession.
"If the president does not reverse course, he will increase the unemployment rate to recessionary levels," American Enterprise Institute Director of Economic Policy Michael Asimow told CNBC.

Director of Economics at the Budget Labs at Yale, Ernie Tedeschi, predicts "retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturing" will experience immediate job cuts.
"When you don't know what the tariff rate is going to be an hour from now, let alone a week from now or a month from now or a year from now, how can you as a business hire and invest in that environment?" Tedeschi said.

While in West Palm Beach, Fla., over the weekend, Donald Trump claimed that he's in negotiations with other countries.
"I spoke to a lot of leaders, European, Asian, from all over the world," Trump said, according to the Associated Press. "They're dying to make a deal."
"And I said, we're not going to have deficits with your country," he claimed. "We're not going to do that, because to me a deficit is a loss. We're going to have surpluses or at worst, going to be breaking even."

"Trump really … is one of the most effective politicians … whatever you think of the policy and him as a person," Bill Maher said following a dinner with Donald Trump on Monday, March 31.
"Just as a politician, just understanding that [you should] always lean in to being more who you are," he continued.

Bill Maher went on to say that President Donald Trump excels at connecting with supporters.
"The people are not savvy about issues but they smell a phony a mile away and that kind of s***, nobody else does it," he said.

Donald Trump won both the electoral and popular vote during the 2024 presidential election, and the loss has led many to wonder what the future of the Democratic party will look like.
"You know, he has those moments that no other politician has. And the Democrats have to find that guy," Bill Maher said. "But let's be real — they've been searching for years, and they're still coming up empty."

Bill Maher shared that he appreciates Donald Trump's unconventional approach to dealing with the Taliban.
"When he did that thing where the guy came in from the Taliban and he said, 'This is an aerial picture of your house. If during our withdrawal one American is hurt, just know I know where you live.' … I was like, 'Oh, can we just play the music now? Because I don't care it's Donald Trump and he's the worst person ever, blah, blah, blah — I f****** love that,'" he recalled.

Donald Trump, who is a native New Yorker, committed to protecting his hometown during the campaign, Bill Maher recalled.
"One time they were doing something, something was going on and he said, 'You know what? When you come after New York, you gotta go through me.' It's like, oh — hometown boy," he said.

The individual who snapped a picture of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez noted that the luxury trip goes against the congresswoman's political stance.
"Nothing says, 'Power to the people' like ignoring voters looking to say hello and reclining in first class while tweeting about income inequality," the flier told the New York Post.

X users were also annoyed with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's expensive travels.
"AOC and Bernie Sanders: The champagne communists," one user wrote. "First class and multiple houses for we, welfare, subway tokens and Section 8 for thee. Fight the Oligarchy."

Republican congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis didn't hesitate to throw jabs at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders.
"Socialists are hypocrites. I'm surprised she didn't take a private jet like most of her comrades," Malliotakis quipped.

State Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar accused Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of being "out of touch with her principles."
"It's absolutely rich in hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is the operative word," Kassar said, according to New York Post.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders have been vocal critics of Donald Trump, Elon Musk and other billionaires.
"We as a community must choose and vote for Democrats and elected officials who know how to stand for the working class," the congresswoman said at one of the Fight the Oligarchy rallies.
"We're gonna throw these bums out and fight for the nation we deserve," she continued. "This isn't just about Republicans. We need a Democratic Party that fights harder for us, too."

Trump Denies Inflation Is Real

Donald Trump made it clear he was not backtracking despite people calling for him to pause the tariffs.
"Oil prices are down, interest rates are down (the slow-moving fed should cut rates!), food prices are down, there is NO INFLATION and the long-time abused USA is bringing in billions of dollars a week from the abusing countries on Tariffs that are already in place," he penned in the social media update.

In response to Donald Trump's heavy duties imposed on China, Beijing imposed a 34 percent tariff last week.
"This is despite the fact that the biggest abuser of them all, China, whose markets are crashing, just raised its tariffs by 34 percent, on top of its long-term ridiculously high tariffs (plus!), not acknowledging my warning for abusing countries not to retaliate," Trump added in his lengthy update.
"They've made enough, for decades, taking advantage of the Good OL' USA! Our past 'leaders' are to blame for allowing this and so much else, to happen to our Country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he continued to rant.

Donald Trump's deflection comes as Dow predictions dropped more than 20 percent from their peak on Monday, April 7, after the right-winger put the tariffs into place last week.
Per the New York Post, on Sunday, April 6, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 2.1 percent, while the S&P 500 plummeted about 2.5 percent. Additionally, the Nasdaq fell almost 3.1 percent.

Despite the numbers, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent backed up Donald Trump's claim that there aren't severe repercussions from the tariffs.
"Everything is working very smoothly so the American people, they can take great comfort in that," the former hedge fund manager explained during a Sunday, April 6, appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. "In terms of the market reaction, look, we get these short-term market reactions from time to time. As the treasury secretary, what I've been very impressed with is the market infrastructure, that we had record volume on Friday."

Although people close to Donald Trump are reinforcing the bold move, one of his former supporters, billionaire Bill Ackman, sent a staunch warning about the how these duties will affect the American people.
"The consequences for our country and the millions of our citizens who have supported the president — in particular low-income consumers who are already under a huge amount of economic stress — are going to be severely negative. This is not what we voted for," Ackman wrote on X. "Alternatively, we are heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter and we should start hunkering down."

Mitch McConnell made a major move to shut down Donald Trump after the president unveiled new tariffs on April 2: According to People magazine, he voted for Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine's resolution to repeal the emergency declaration that allowed Trump to place tariffs on Canada. The measure passed 51-48 but is unlikely to pass in the Republican-held House.

While attending a virtual event for Italy's right-leaning co-ruling League Party on April 5, Elon Musk spoke out against Donald Trump's new tariffs.
"At the end of the day, I hope it's agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America," he said.

"If people wish to work in Europe or wish to work in North America, they should be allowed to do so, in my view," Elon Musk told League Party leader Matteo Salvini, noting that this "has certainly been my advice to the president."

Elon Musk also spoke out against Donald Trump after an X account posted a video of senior counselor for trade and manufacturing Peter Navarro explaining the president's new policies.
"Here is Peter Navarro explaining the tariffs and contrary to the paid fake expert class that is usually on corporate media, Peter Navarro has a PhD in economics from Harvard," the MAGA fanpage wrote.

Despite the financial uncertainty, Scott Bessent claimed citizens of the United States should feel "great comfort" about the historic $6 trillion stock market crash.
"Everything is working very smoothly so the American people, they can take great comfort in that," the former hedge fund manager explained during the television appearance. "In terms of the market reaction, look, we get these short-term market reactions from time to time."
"As the treasury secretary, what I've been very impressed with is the market infrastructure, that we had record volume on Friday," he claimed.

Host Kristen Welker asked Scott Bessent about Donald Trump telling the American people they need to "hang tough" while the tariffs are in place and questioned exactly how long it would be until there's economic relief from an impending recession.

"I reject that the assumption — there doesn't have to be a recession," Bessent said. "What we are looking at is building the long-term economic fundamentals for prosperity that I think the previous administration had put us on a course toward financial calamity."
"This is an adjustment process," Bessent continued. "What we saw with President [Ronald] Reagan when he brought down, you know, the Great Inflation and we got past the Carter malaise, that there was some choppiness at that time. But he held the course. And, you know, we're going to hold the course."

While defending his controversial move, Donald Trump claimed his bold actions are doing more for the country than former President Joe Biden did.

According to the New York Post, the stock market slumped on Sunday, April 6, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.1 percent and the S&P 500 plummeting about 2.5 percent, while the Nasdaq fell almost 3.1 percent.
Per the report, Donald Trump's actions had a trickle-down effect on countries all around the world. Asian shares dropped immensely, with Tokyo's 225 index losing about 8 percent when the market opened, and it was later down 6 percent by the middle of the day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng sank to 9.4 percent, while the Shanghai Composite index lost 6.2 percent.

Despite the hardship Donald Trump's tariffs may have on the American people, the businessman claimed the pain will be worth the reward.

"By placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner," Bill Ackman warned in the social media update.
The chief executive officer of Pershing Square Capital Management emphasized how vital trust is for the global markets. "Business is a confidence game. The president is losing the confidence of business leaders around the globe," Ackman added.
The hedge fund manager admitted although he voted for Trump, he now feels betrayed. "The consequences for our country and the millions of our citizens who have supported the president — in particular low-income consumers who are already under a huge amount of economic stress — are going to be severely negative. This is not what we voted for," Ackman wrote. "Alternatively, we are heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter and we should start hunkering down."

Conservative talking head Ben Shapiro spoke out against Donald Trump's new tariffs on the April 3 episode of The Daily Wire's The Ben Shapiro Show: "If you like the products that you have at the quality that you have them and at the price that you have them, you're not gonna get to keep them. You don't get to keep [them]," he said. "You don't get to keep your Xbox at the same rate with the same quality. You don't. That's just not the way that these tariffs are gonna work."
"This is a massive tax increase on American consumers. That's what it is. And it is designed to be so. And it is talked about in these terms by the Trump administration that this will cost 600, 700 billion dollars in additional revenue to the government," he continued. "You know what we call revenue to the government typically, paid for by Americans — because that's who pays for it. If you're importing a product and nobody buys it, then you stop importing the product and nothing gets paid to the government. It has to be sold. That is the — the consumer pays the tax. That is what we would call a tax increase."

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell previously spoke out against the tariffs Donald Trump slapped on Mexico and Canada, writing in a February 12 Louisville Courier Journal op-ed, "Indeed, it's high time for America's closest neighbors to take the crisis at our border seriously. But no matter our best intentions, tariffs are bad policy. … Republicans ought to be clear-eyed about the full, unadulterated impact of tariffs as we work to restore sound fiscal policy to our government."
After Trump unveiled even more tariffs on April 2, McConnell made a major move to shut down the president: According to People magazine, he voted for Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine's resolution to repeal the emergency declaration that allowed Trump to place tariffs on Canada. The measure passed 51-48 but is unlikely to pass in the Republican-held House.

"Preserving the long-term prosperity of American industry and workers requires working with our allies, not against them," Mitch McConnell wrote in a mid-February Louisville Courier Journal op-ed speaking out against Donald Trump's tariffs.

"Trade wars with our partners hurt working people most. And the president has better tools to protect American workers without forcing our families and businesses to absorb higher costs."

Sean Hannity, meanwhile, urged Americans to wait out the initial pain inflicted by Donald Trump's new tariffs, promising that the long-term results will be well worth it: "I personally don't want the United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, taken advantage of anymore. And for whatever short-term, minor pain that may be inflicted on us, the long-term benefits are going to be massive. All of these critics, I promise you, will have egg on their face, and it's only a matter of time," the conservative talking head said on the April 4 episode of Premiere Radio Networks' The Sean Hannity Show.

Ted Cruz spoke about Donald Trump's tariffs on a Friday, April 4, episode of his "Verdict" podcast.
"I'm seeing a lot of Republican cheerleaders reflexively defending what the White House is doing," Cruz said.
He went on to claim that a trade war "would destroy jobs here at home and do real damage to the U.S. economy."

Ted Cruz warned listeners of how Donald Trump's vision for the country could cause a financial downturn.
"If we go into a recession, particularly a bad recession, 2026, in all likelihood, politically, would be a bloodbath," Cruz said. "You would face a Democrat House, and you might even face a Democrat Senate."

Ted Cruz admitted that he's "not a fan" of tariffs, but he is hopeful that Donald Trump is using them as a negotiation tactic.
"A hundred years ago, the U.S. economy didn't have the leverage to have the kind of impact we do now. But I worry, there are voices within the administration that want to see these tariffs continue forever and ever," he said.

Ted Cruz later admitted that his understanding of Donald Trump's use of taxes on foreign goods could differ from the president's.
"Look, I want this to succeed," Cruz said when discussing tariffs. "But my definition of succeed may be different than the White House's."
"That's success for the American workers, American businesses, American growth, American prosperity," he added.

During a press conference, Donald Trump clarified why he is attempting to prioritize American goods and businesses.
Trump said in a press conference "jobs and factories will come roaring back," according to CNBC.
"We will supercharge our domestic industrial base, we will pry open foreign markets and break down foreign trade barriers and ultimately more production at home will mean stronger competition and lower prices for consumers," he continued.

Donald Trump celebrated his plans while talking to journalists and supporters.
"April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America's destiny was reclaimed and the day that we began to make America wealthy again," he said.

"We will charge them approximately half of what they are and have been charging us," he said, adding, "because we are being very kind."
