Hume Questions Trump's Criticism of Zelensky
Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume raised concerns about President Donald Trump's Wednesday, April 23, comments regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.Trump argued that Zelensky was harder to negotiate with than Russian President Vladimir Putin, a claim that puzzled Hume. On Special Report, Hume noted, "Putin, so far as I can tell, hasn't agreed to much of anything except, yes, he'd love to annex Crimea, which is part of the proposal that's before him now. That's no concession. All that is, is taking a gain."
Hume continued by explaining that Zelensky's resistance to Putin's annexation of Crimea was grounded in the region's historical ties to Ukraine: "Zelensky resists that because Crimea, up until the Russians invaded it 10 years or so ago, was part of Ukraine."
Hume's comments suggested that Trump's criticism of Zelensky's approach to peace talks with Russia might be misplaced, as Putin's unwillingness to compromise on Crimea seems to be a larger hurdle in negotiations.
Here's what's happening.

Trump's Warning to Zelensky: Peace or Long Fight
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying that his position was putting Ukraine in a dire situation.Trump remarked, "He can have Peace or, he can fight for another three years before losing the whole Country." He further criticized Zelensky's refusal to recognize Russian control of Crimea, calling the Ukrainian leader's stance "inflammatory" and suggesting that it was a significant barrier to peace talks with Russia.
Trump also said that Zelensky had "nothing to boast about" and that his hardline stance was only prolonging the war: "The statement made by Zelensky today will do nothing but prolong the 'killing field,' and nobody wants that!" he said.
Trump's Call for Urgent Peace Deal
Donald Trump emphasized his desire to end the war and save lives, stating, "I have much to do with wanting to save, on average, five thousand Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, who are dying for no reason whatsoever."He reiterated that peace was achievable but suggested that Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he claims has "no cards to play," needed to act quickly to finalize a deal. Trump added, "We are very close to a Deal, but the man with 'no cards to play' should now, finally, GET IT DONE."
White House's Frustration with Zelensky
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed frustration with Volodymyr Zelensky's approach to the peace process. Leavitt criticized Zelensky for using the media to shape the negotiation process, stating, "The president's national security team, his advisers, has exuded significant time, energy and effort to try to bring this war to an end."She also noted Donald Trump's growing frustration with the lack of progress, adding, "The American taxpayer has funded billions of dollars in this effort. And enough is enough. The president's frustrated. His patience is running very thin."
Trump's Repeated Criticism of Zelensky
Donald Trump has consistently criticized Volodymyr Zelensky for not being more flexible in the peace talks with Russia, particularly over Crimea.Despite his harsh words, Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to bring the conflict to an end, suggesting that if he were in power, the war could have been avoided. However, the continued tension between Trump and Zelensky indicates that significant obstacles remain in the path to peace, particularly when it comes to issues like the status of Crimea.
With both sides unwilling to yield on these critical points, the future of the negotiations remains uncertain.
