Gavin Newsom announced that he plans to file a lawsuit against Donald Trump's administration after 300 National Guard troops were deployed to the West Coast on Sunday, June 8.LAPD chief shared his cops "are overwhelmed" by the number of anti-ICE protests taking place in the city. On Sunday, June 8, Gavin Newsom shared a copy of his letter to Pete Hegseth on X."At present, law enforcement authorities from the City and County of Los Angeles are safeguarding public safety, and, as demonstrated by the robust law enforcement response yesterday evening to protect federal facilities, local law enforcement resources are sufficient to maintain order," Newsom wrote in the letter.
Still, the Department of Defense threatened to send 500 Marines to the California city "if violence continues."

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell called the riots that occurred in response to mass deportations "disgusting" during a press conference, and he later claimed the protests were getting "increasingly worse and more violent.""We are overwhelmed," McDonnell admitted, according to NBC Los Angeles. "Tonight, we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers. That can kill you."

Gavin Newsom accused Donald Trump of being "a stone-cold liar," as the governor claimed the president "never once" mentioned deploying the National Guard when they chatted on Friday, June 6."It was a very civil conversation. I've always wanted to approach engagement with the President of the United States in a respectful and responsible way," Newsom stated. "But there's no working with the president, there's only working for him. And I will never work for Donald Trump."

Gavin Newsom later asserted that things escalated in California once Donald Trump decided to implement his strategy for illegal immigration in the state."We didn't have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they're actually needed," Newsom stated on X.
"Rescind the order," he concluded. "Return control to California."
