Zelensky's Response and Ukraine's Position
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his own post on X, described his conversation with Donald Trump as "good" and outlined the key points discussed. The two leaders celebrated the Ukrainian Parliament's ratification of a new mineral deal between the U.S. and Ukraine that will divide profits from mining and drilling licenses equally. Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is prepared for a 30-day ceasefire "starting even today" and reiterated that the country is "ready to engage in talks in any format."
However, Zelensky emphasized that Russia must first demonstrate its commitment to peace through an unconditional ceasefire.
Trump's Ongoing Commitment to Peace
Donald Trump highlighted that any ceasefire must ultimately lead to a lasting peace agreement. He assured that he would be available "on a moment's notice" to facilitate negotiations if needed.
In his statement, Trump highlighted the tragic loss of young soldiers in the ongoing conflict, asserting, "Thousands of young soldiers are dying on a weekly basis, and everybody should want it to STOP." He expressed his unwavering commitment to securing peace for both Ukraine and Russia, stating that the U.S. and Europe are ready to work together toward a "lasting peace."
Zelensky and Trump Discuss Future Efforts
Volodymyr Zelensky also reported that he and Donald Trump "agreed on further contacts" to discuss the situation. Trump, according to Zelensky, confirmed his desire for the war to end and his readiness to support a ceasefire. The two leaders' call, which occurred on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, also included a discussion on Victory in Europe Day, which marks the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Zelensky's remarks were a subtle critique of Russian President Vladimir Putin's false claim that his invasion of Ukraine was aimed at "denazifying" the country, a narrative widely condemned by the Jewish community.
Social Media Reactions and Putin's Parallel Diplomacy
On social media, Volodymyr Zelensky's call with Donald Trump and the ongoing peace discussions sparked mixed reactions. Some users applauded the efforts to negotiate a ceasefire, while others criticized Russia's lack of willingness to engage in genuine peace talks.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Moscow, where the two leaders signed a document enhancing their "strategic partnership" and discussed critical issues including the Ukraine conflict.
This meeting, occurring the same day as Trump's call with Zelensky, highlighted the complex and ongoing international dynamics surrounding the war in Ukraine.
