Rep. Don Bacon Calls for Trump to Fire Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
On Monday, April 21, Rep. Don Bacon, a former Air Force brigadier general, became the first sitting House Republican to suggest that President Donald Trump should fire Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the New York Post reported.
This came in response to ongoing controversies, including the unauthorized disclosure of war plans. 
Bacon, who has previously criticized Trump's handling of the war in Ukraine, voiced concerns over Hegseth's qualifications: "I had concerns from the get-go because Pete Hegseth didn't have a lot of experience," Bacon told POLITICO. "I like him on Fox. But does he have the experience to lead one of the largest organizations in the world? That's a concern."

Controversy Over Unauthorized Disclosure of War Plans
Don Bacon's comments reference reports that Pete Hegseth shared details of a March 15 military strike against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. 
According to a report in The New York Times, Hegseth sent this sensitive information to a Signal chat group that included his wife, his brother and his personal attorney. 
This was not the first incident of unauthorized disclosure, as a similar controversy had arisen the previous month when editor-in-chief of The Atlantic Jeffrey Goldberg was included in a Signal group chat detailing a planned attack.
Bacon's Strong Disapproval and Call for Accountability



Don Bacon did not mince words when discussing the situation: "If it's true that he had another [Signal] chat with his family, about the missions against the Houthis, it's totally unacceptable," he said.
"I'm not in the White House, and I'm not going to tell the White House how to manage this, but I find it unacceptable, and I wouldn't tolerate it if I was in charge," he continued.

Bacon's statement reportedly reflects his frustration with what he views as a disregard for national security protocols.
Pentagon's Response and Bacon's Criticism
In response to the report, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell insisted that "there was no classified information in any Signal chat." 
But Don Bacon remained unconvinced. 
"Russia and China put up thousands of people to monitor all these phone calls at the very top, and the No. 1 target besides the president… would be the secretary of defense," he said.
"For him to be putting secret stuff on his phone is not right. He's acting like he's above the law — and that shows an amateur person," Bacon added.
Despite the Pentagon's statement, Bacon's concerns highlight broader issues regarding the security risks of mishandling sensitive information.
White House's Support for Hegseth and Public Reaction
The White House has continued to publicly support Pete Hegseth, with President Donald Trump dismissing questions about the defense secretary's job status. 
Speaking at the White House Easter Egg Roll, Trump said, "He's doing a great job," and then quipped, "Ask the Houthis how he's doing." 
Hegseth also responded to the controversy, criticizing the media for spreading "hit pieces" based on anonymous sources: "What a big surprise that a few leakers get fired and suddenly a bunch of hit pieces come out from the same media that peddled the Russia hoax," he said. He then accused the media of attempting to "slash and burn people and ruin their reputations."

Zeldin Criticizes New York's Climate Act as 'Delusional'
On Sunday, April 20, two days before Earth Day, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin sharply criticized New York's Climate Act, telling the New York Post it was a "left-wing recipe for an energy and economic catastrophe."
Zeldin's remarks came in the wake of the Donald Trump administration halting the Empire Wind Power project off the New York-New Jersey coast. 
This decision, which delayed the state's efforts to meet emission reduction goals under its controversial green energy law, sparked heated reactions from both political sides.

Zeldin's Opposition to New York's Green Energy Goals
Lee Zeldin expressed his concern that New York's ambitious climate goals are unrealistic and lack a feasible plan for achieving them. 
"New York's lofty climate goals don't come equipped with any feasible plan to actually achieve them. The consequence is that the people who can least afford the economic pain are the ones who get targeted and harmed the most," he told The Post. 
Zeldin criticized the state's policies, including the ban on the "safe extraction" of natural gas and the push to eliminate gas-powered vehicles and stoves. 
"The idea that we can replace baseload forms of power with intermittent power like wind is simply delusional," he said.
Experts and Industry Leaders Agree on Reworking the Climate Act
Several experts and energy professionals echoed Lee Zeldin's concerns. 
John Howard, former interim chairman of the Public Service Commission, called for a reevaluation of the Climate Act, stating, "We can flap our arms. It doesn't mean we're going to fly. Let's face reality." 
Howard, who described the law as "well-intentioned" but overly optimistic, added, "The circumstances have changed. Let's figure out what we're going to do." 
He stressed the need for a more practical approach to achieving New York's climate targets.
Impact of Trump's Potential Cuts to Renewable Energy Tax Credits
One of the complicating factors in achieving the Climate Act's ambitious goals is the possibility of tax credit cuts for renewable energy projects that fight climate change.
John Howard noted that renewable energy tax incentives, which support solar and wind energy, may be reduced or eliminated in the upcoming budget under President Donald Trump. 
He warned that this could significantly affect the state's ability to meet its green energy mandates: "New York residents may soon feel the results of the climate law in their wallets as well," Howard said, referring to potential increases in utility costs.
Hochul Responds to Criticism
Governor Kathy Hochul, while facing criticism, defended New York's green energy transition. 
Spokesperson Paul DeMichele emphasized the state's progress, noting, "We have one of the cleanest grids in the nation — with 50 percent zero-emission electricity." 
Hochul's office also criticized the Donald Trump administration's decision to pause the Empire Wind project, stating, "The governor recognizes that we can only continue to serve as that good example if the lights stay on and costs are low." 
However, Lee Zeldin countered by defending the Trump administration's approach, stating that it promotes a balanced energy strategy that considers both environmental protection and economic growth: "The Trump EPA understands that we can and must protect the environment AND grow the economy," he said, emphasizing the need for a more pragmatic and economically viable energy policy.

Jimmy Kimmel didn't hesitate to mock Donald Trump in his Monday, April 21, monologue.
"What are the chances Trump declares himself Pope?" Kimmel asked. "They are not low. They are not low."
"As I'm sure you know, Pope Francis passed away this morning," the comedian said before adding, "don't clap for that, you'll go right to h***."

Jimmy Kimmel noted that it was fitting Pope Francis passed away right after Easter.
"The Pope — who was very well-loved, he seemed to be a kind and humble man — had been in poor health. But he sucked it up, he rallied, he delivered a message at Easter Mass, and then he passed away this morning," Kimmel said. "Is there anything more Catholic than waiting until Monday to die so you don't upstage Jesus Christ?"

The pope was often critical of the Donald Trump administration, and in his final hours, he urged J.D. Vance to have compassion for immigrants.


"Hours before his passing, Pope Francis met briefly at the Vatican with, of all people, Vice President J.D. Vance. Oh, man. What a way to go, huh? I mean, 'Holy Father, do you have any last wishes?'" Kimmel said.
"'Not this! Not this! Not a, not a meet and greet with Vice President Maybelline! No, thank you,'" he joked, referencing allegations that Vance wears eye makeup for public appearances.

Despite their differences, J.D. Vance honored Pope Francis on X after he died.
"I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis," the Ohio-native wrote. "My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him."

"I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill," he continued. "But I'll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul."

During their meeting, J.D. Vance reportedly told Pope Francis, "It's good to see you in better health."

Despite his meeting with Vance, the religious leader seemingly shaded Donald Trump's policies in his holiday message.

"How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized and migrants," Francis wrote in his Easter address.

In the fake story, Larry David writes a first-person account of having dinner with Adolf Hitler at the "Old Chancellery" in 1939. Despite the similarities, the actor never explicitly names Bill Maher as the inspiration behind the essay.
"No one I knew encouraged me to go," David penned, adding how he was critical of the dictator "from the beginning."
The Seinfeld co-creator pointed out how people advised him not to speak with Hitler, but he insisted "hate gets us nowhere."

"Two weeks later, I found myself on the front steps of the Old Chancellery and was led into an opulent living room, where a few of the Führer's most vocal supporters had gathered: Himmler, Göring, Leni Riefenstahl and the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII," Larry David said in jest about meeting Adolf Hitler. During the Friday, April 11, episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Bill Maher recounted his March conversation with Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.
"What I'm going to do is report exactly what happened. You decide what you think about it," he stated about the backlash. "It doesn't matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian; it matters who he is on the world stage. Why can't we get the guy I met to be the public guy?"

According to NBC News, Noem's handbag, which had about $3,000 in cash in it, was snatched at Capital Burger while the Secret Service was nearby.
"Her entire family was in town, including her children and grandchildren — she was using the withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts," the spokesperson said following her April 20 dinner.
Aside from the luxury bag being taken, the Department of Homeland Security rep said the thief now has Noem's driver's license, passport, DHS badge, makeup, checks, bank card, healthcare card, medication and apartment keys.

The New York Post reported Kristi Noem was carrying around a Gucci B large shoulder bag worth $4,400, which also had a Louis Vuitton Clemence Purse inside.

"Kristi Noem, the person in charge of our national security, was robbed in a restaurant while she had her security detail with her," someone wrote. "Got it."

Donald Trump previously expressed his concerns about Washington, D.C., having a higher crime rate than average.

While speaking with journalists at the White House's Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 21, Donald Trump raved about Pete Hegseth's work. "He's doing a great job," the Republican leader said via the New York Post.
Trump called the reports of him firing Hegseth over the alleged leak a "waste of time."
"Ask the Houthis how he's doing," the commander-in-chief noted, referencing the armed political and religious group.

During a Monday, April 21, appearance on Fox & Friends, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went as far as to claim the staff at the Department of Defense is trying to harm Pete Hegseth's career after Politico published a takedown by a former Pentagon staffer.
"The president stands strongly behind Secretary Hegseth, who is doing a phenomenal job leading the Pentagon," the media liaison said. "This is what happens when the entire Pentagon is working against you and against the monumental change that you are trying to implement."

Pete Hegseth also spoke out about the allegations against him while attending the annual White House event alongside his wife, Jennifer Rauchet, who was reportedly a part of the text chain with the classified information.
"What a big surprise that a few leakers get fired and suddenly a bunch of hit pieces come out from the same media that peddled the Russia hoax [and] won't give back their Pulitzers," the official told members of the media via the New York Post.
"This is what the media does," Hegseth emphasized. "They take anonymous sources from disgruntled former employees and then they try to slash and burn people and ruin their reputations."

A spokesperson for the Pentagon came out strongly against the reports of the department crumbling with Pete Hegseth at the helm.

In the story published by Politico, former chief Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot made shocking allegations about what went on behind the scenes at the Department of Defense.
"In short, the building is in disarray under Hegseth's leadership," he claimed. "There are very likely more shoes to drop in short order, with even bigger bombshell stories coming this week, key Pentagon reporters have been telling sources privately."

"If true, this will be a disgrace… This is not the way to solve things," he stated.
"Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that little by little extend to other persons and groups," the leader added.

White House Launches New COVID-19 Information Website Focused on Lab Leak Theory
On Friday, April 18, the White House launched a revamped version of its COVID-19 information website, COVID.gov, which now redirects visitors to a page dedicated to investigating the "true origins" of the pandemic, the New York Post reported.

The revamped site explicitly criticizes both the former Joe Biden administration and former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's handling of the pandemic. It presents five key points to support the theory that COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese lab. These points include:
"The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature."


"Data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans. This runs contrary to previous pandemics, where there were multiple spillover events."


"Wuhan is home to China's foremost SARS research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) at inadequate biosafety levels."


"Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) researchers were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the wet market."


"By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin, it would have already surfaced. But it hasn't."
House Select Subcommittee's Report
The website cites the findings of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, which released a 557-page report in December 2024. 
The report concluded that COVID-19 likely originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where EcoHealth Alliance was conducting experiments funded by U.S. taxpayers. This conclusion is supported by other federal agencies, including the FBI and the Energy Department's National Laboratories as well as former officials like CIA Director John Ratcliffe. 
The website includes a statement: "A lab-related incident involving gain-of-function research is the most likely the origin of COVID-19." 
It also criticizes current government oversight of gain-of-function research, calling it "incomplete, severely convoluted and lacking global applicability."
Biden Administration's Role and Allegations of Obstruction
The webpage accuses the ex-Joe Biden administration, specifically the Department of Health and Human Services, EcoHealth Alliance and top advisor to Anthony Fauci, David Morens, of "obstruction." 
It claims they hindered investigations into the origins of COVID-19 and the government's pandemic response, which led to over 1.2 million deaths in the U.S. 
The site also highlights the "full and unconditional" pardon Biden issued to Fauci before leaving office, covering actions from Fauci dating back to 2014.
Cuomo's Pandemic Actions and Defense
The page also criticizes New York's pandemic response under Governor Andrew Cuomo, focusing on his March 25, 2020, executive order that forced nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients. 
The site accuses Cuomo's administration of attempting to cover up the consequences of this policy. In response, a spokesperson for Cuomo defended his actions, citing a Department of Justice Inspector General report that found Cuomo's actions were consistent with CDC guidelines. 
"More than 1 million Americans died as a result of the COVID pandemic, and our hearts break for the families of every person who lost a loved one, but unfortunately, as the DOJ IG confirmed, that pain has been weaponized and politicized for purely electoral purposes for years," Rich Azzopardi said in a statement. 

He also mentioned that investigations by the DOJ and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office had not found any wrongdoing.

Universities Gang Up on Trump After Harvard Sues

Over 170 University Leaders Condemn Trump Administration's Interference in Higher Education
On Tuesday, April 22, over 170 university and college presidents, along with scholarly society leaders, issued a joint statement condemning Donald Trump administration's approach to higher education, Reuters reported.
The statement was prompted by Harvard University's claims that the administration was threatening the institution's independence. The statement was signed by leaders from prestigious colleges, including Princeton, Brown, Harvard, the University of Hawaii and Connecticut State Community College. 
These leaders criticized what they described as "the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education."

Higher Ed Stance on Government Oversight and Independence
The statement expressed the universities' openness to legitimate government oversight but firmly opposed what they considered undue government intrusion. 
"We are open to constructive reform and do not oppose legitimate government oversight," the statement noted. "However, we must oppose undue government intrusion in the lives of those who learn, live, and work on our campuses." 
The presidents also called for the protection of the autonomy of higher education institutions in the face of increasing governmental pressure.
Harvard's Rejection of Trump Administration's Demands
This joint statement came on the heels of Harvard University's rejection of several demands from the Donald Trump administration. On April 14, Harvard pushed back against the administration's attempts to exert oversight over the university's student body, faculty and curriculum, which seemed aimed at curbing what the administration perceived as the university's liberal bias. 
In response to Harvard's defiance, the Trump administration announced that it was freezing $2.3 billion in federal funding to the university.
Harvard's Lawsuit Against the Administration
In retaliation for these actions, Harvard filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump's executive branch on Monday, April 21, seeking to end the freeze on federal funds and to reverse the administration's demands. 
Harvard's lawsuit accused the federal government of attempting to "overhaul Harvard's governance, control Harvard's faculty hiring and dictate what faculty may teach Harvard students" for ideological reasons. 
The university further claimed that these actions violated the constitutional protections for free speech and failed to comply with proper procedures under federal civil rights laws.
Reactions from Jewish Organizations Against Trump Admin
The controversy sparked widespread support for Harvard from other academic leaders who deeply criticized Donald Trump's second administration. 
On April 15, over 60 current and former university presidents signed an open letter expressing their strong support for Harvard President Alan Garber's rejection of the administration's demands. 
CNN also reported how prominent Jewish organizations, such as the Anti-Defamation League and Harvard's chapter of the Hillel student organization, have criticized the administration's broad attacks on the university. 
The college's Harvard Hillel department posted on Instagram, "Shuttering apolitical, life-saving research; targeting the university's tax-exempt status; and threatening all student visas… is neither focused nor measured, and stands to substantially harm the very Jewish students and scholars it purports to protect."

Fox News has yet to acknowledge the mistake after it mislabeled Kyiv as a part of Russia during a live Easter broadcast.
"If this was a mistake rather than a deliberate political statement, there should be an apology and an investigation into who made the mistake," Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Heorhii Tykhyi wrote on X on April 20.

President Volodymyr Zelensky seemingly responded to Fox News on Telegram.
"Instead of broadcasting religious service from Moscow, the focus should be on pressuring Moscow to genuinely commit to a full ceasefire," Zelensky wrote, according The Kyiv Independent.
"We thank all the media, podcasters, bloggers, and everyone sharing the truth about what is happening," he continued.

While on Telegram, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine was working toward a resolution, which was recommended by Donald Trump, but Russia wasn't cooperative.
"The corresponding proposal for a complete and unconditional ceasefire for a period of 30 days has remained unanswered by Russia for 39 days," Zelensky shared. "The United States made this proposal, Ukraine accepted it positively, but Russia ignored it."

"If Russia is suddenly ready to really join the format of complete and unconditional silence, Ukraine will act in a mirror image — as it will be from the Russian side," Volodymyr Zelensky continued.
"Silence in response to silence, strikes to protect against strikes. If complete silence really prevails, Ukraine proposes to extend it after the end of Easter on April 20," he added, referencing Russia's call for a temporary truce to celebrate the Easter holiday. "This will show Russia's true intentions, because 30 hours is enough for headlines, but not for real confidence-building measures. Thirty days can give peace a chance."

John Ullyot — who resigned from his position last week — wrote a story for Politico entitled the "Month From Hell," in which he makes the case that Pete Hegseth will be a major problem for President Donald Trump.
"It's hard to see Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth remaining in his role for much longer," Ullyot claimed. "In short, the building is in disarray under Hegseth's leadership."

One of John Ullyot's biggest points of contention was how Pete Hegseth treated his former advisors Dan Caldwell and Darin Selnick after they departed their jobs and what he stands to lose without them.
"In the aftermath, Defense Department officials working for Hegseth tried to smear the aides anonymously to reporters, claiming they were fired for leaking sensitive information as part of an investigation ordered earlier this month," Ullyot said. "Yet none of this is true. While the department said that it would conduct polygraph tests as part of the probe, not one of the three has been given a lie detector test. In fact, at least one of them has told former colleagues that investigators advised him he was about to be cleared officially of any wrongdoing. Unfortunately, Hegseth's team has developed a habit of spreading flat-out, easily debunked falsehoods anonymously about their colleagues on their way out the door. Hegseth is now presiding over a strange and baffling purge that will leave him without his two closest advisers of over a decade."

According to John Ullyot, the alleged madness is not over: "More firings may be coming, according to rumors in the building," he warned of the Pete Hegseth-led department.
"There are very likely more shoes to drop in short order, with even bigger bombshell stories coming this week, key Pentagon reporters have been telling sources privately," the ex-employee added.

John Ullyot made it clear it's in Donald Trump's best interest as well as the country's to part ways with Pete Hegseth.
"The president deserves better than the current mishegoss at the Pentagon," he emphasized. "Given his record of holding prior Cabinet leaders accountable, many in the secretary's own inner circle will applaud quietly if Trump chooses to do the same in short order at the top of the Defense Department."

"Implicit in it should be the idea that if and when [the Democrats] come back to power — and we will — we are not going to look kindly upon people who … facilitated authoritarianism in our country," Jamie Raskin told host Tommy Vietor.
Vietor revealed he'd spoken with a Latin American policy specialist who suggested Democrats should "threaten to take action against any foreign government that participates in the extraordinary rendition of American citizens."

The most explicit example of leaders from other countries caving to Donald Trump is El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele claiming he cannot return wrongfully deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia after the Supreme Court ruled he should be back on American soil.
"The whole idea that Bukele doesn't have any power to return an American prisoner who was sent to him under an agreement where he's getting paid $6 million by America is ridiculous," Jamie Raskin said. "He's our legal agent in this dubious arrangement they created. Of course, he's got the power to return them."
The Republican leader has been using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to send illegal criminals out of the United States to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) prison in El Salvador.

Jamie Raskin emphasized how the opposition party needs to steep themselves "in far more work of transnational Democrat solidarity" to try to "prevent the spread of lawlessness and the fascist chaos that's been unleashed against us."
As Donald Trump continues to ignore the barriers put in place to avoid total authoritarianism, the politician from Maryland said he thinks "we're living in something like a gangster state right now."
"We have to stop that, obviously, to prevent a slide into complete dictatorship," Raskin added. "Donald Trump is a convicted criminal. Could he be sent off to a foreign prison?"

During a Monday, April 14, meeting in the Oval Office, CNN's Kaitlan Collins asked Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele about returning Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
"Why don't you just say, 'Isn't it wonderful that we're keeping criminals out of our country?'" the former star of The Apprentice spat back. "That's why nobody watches you anymore. You have no credibility."
"How can I return him to the United States? Like if I smuggle him into the United States?" Bukele replied to the question, according to NBC News. "Of course I'm not going to do it. The question is preposterous."

Per the report citing four different sources, Pete Hegseth sent the same information to his inner circle about the strikes he previously sent to The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg — who was mistakenly added to a Signal group chat filled with members of Donald Trump's administration.
According to Reuters, Hegseth's wife, Jennifer Rauchet — a former Fox News producer — has reportedly been present at many meetings with foreign military officials.
A spokesperson for the Pentagon responded to the allegation, claiming the media was "enthusiastically taking the grievances of disgruntled former employees as the sole sources for their article."

The supposed leak comes as insiders claim the Defense Department has turned chaotic with Pete Hegseth at the helm.
In an op-ed published by Politico on Sunday, April 20, ex-Pentagon Spokesperson John Ullyot alleged the past few weeks had been the "month from h*** and emphasized how President Donald Trump deserves better.
Per Reuters, one of the former Army National Guard officer's top advisers, Dan Caldwell, was dismissed after an investigation tied him to the mishandling of confidential information.

With the alleged mishandling of information, prominent Democrats have called for Pete Hegseth to step down from his position in Donald Trump's administration.
"We keep learning how Pete Hegseth put lives at risk. But Trump is still too weak to fire him. Pete Hegseth must be fired," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote in a Sunday, April 20, message shared to X.

After Pete Hegseth's accidental text message situation, the Pentagon's acting inspector general, Steven Stebbins, confirmed he would be looking into the text messaging breach.
"The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business," Stebbins reportedly penned in a letter to Hegseth via the Associated Press.

"Ignore the Supreme Court. Arrest anyone who tries to enforce this [ruling]," conservative pundit Jesse Kelly wrote on X on Saturday, April 19. "Dissolve the Supreme Court entirely if they push. You can deport foreigners, or you don't have a country anymore. There are no good choices now."
Federalist co-founder Sean Davis boldly chimed in on the conversation on the social media platform, writing, "When we're done deporting illegals, it's time to start deporting rogue judges."
"The Redheaded Libertarian" Josie Glabach questioned of the January 6 rioters, "Why did the Supreme Court not get involved when American citizens were being locked in DC's Gulag without due process for years, but they are interfering with the deportation of criminal gang members from third world countries under the Constitutional Alien Enemies Act?"

In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 19, the Supreme Court halted Donald Trump's mass deportation of alleged illegal immigrants in an action related to a group of migrants in Texas who have claimed the administration is wrongfully trying to kick them out of the country.
"The government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this court," the group made clear in a statement via CNN.

However, not every member of the court was supportive of the move. Later on Saturday, April 19, conservative Justice Samuel Alito released his own dissent of the swift action. Judge Clarence Thomas also backed the criticism.
"In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court issued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the application, with dubious factual support for its order and without providing any explanation for its order," Alito wrote, according to the New York Post.

Donald Trump's administration expressed their frustration with the Supreme Court barring them from doing what they set out to accomplish.
"The government has agreed not to remove pursuant the AEA those AEA detainees who do file habeas claims," the Republican leader's top appellate attorney General D. John Sauer wrote in response, according to CNN. "This court should dissolve its current administrative stay and allow the lower courts to address the relevant legal and factual questions in the first instance – including the development of a proper factual record."

"I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis," the politician wrote. "My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him."
"I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill," he continued. "But I'll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul."

According to The Daily Beast, J.D. Vance told Pope Francis, "It's good to see you in better health."
Despite acting cordial, the religious leader seemingly shared his disapproval of Donald Trump's administration after he met with the vice president.
"How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized and migrants," Francis wrote in his Easter address.

Pope Francis bluntly shared there was "an exchange of opinions on the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners."

"If true, this will be a disgrace… This is not the way to solve things," he stated.

On Friday, April 18, the White House launched a revamped version of its COVID-19 information website, COVID.gov, which now redirects visitors to a page dedicated to investigating the "true origins" of the pandemic, the New York Post reported.
The new landing page prominently features the theory that COVID-19 likely originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019, shifting away from its previous focus on testing, treatment and vaccination details.

COVID-19 Lab Leak Theory Key Points
The revamped site explicitly criticizes both the former Joe Biden administration and former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's handling of the pandemic. It presents five key points to support the theory that COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese lab. These points include:
"The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature."


"Data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans. This runs contrary to previous pandemics, where there were multiple spillover events."


"Wuhan is home to China's foremost SARS research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) at inadequate biosafety levels."


"Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) researchers were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the wet market."


"By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin, it would have already surfaced. But it hasn't."
House Select Subcommittee's Report
The website cites the findings of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, which released a 557-page report in December 2024. 
The report concluded that COVID-19 likely originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where EcoHealth Alliance was conducting experiments funded by U.S. taxpayers. This conclusion is supported by other federal agencies, including the FBI and the Energy Department's National Laboratories as well as former officials like CIA Director John Ratcliffe. 
The website includes a statement: "A lab-related incident involving gain-of-function research is the most likely the origin of COVID-19." 
It also criticizes current government oversight of gain-of-function research, calling it "incomplete, severely convoluted and lacking global applicability."
Biden Administration's Role and Allegations of Obstruction
The webpage accuses the ex-Joe Biden administration, specifically the Department of Health and Human Services, EcoHealth Alliance and top advisor to Anthony Fauci, David Morens, of "obstruction." 
It claims they hindered investigations into the origins of COVID-19 and the government's pandemic response, which led to over 1.2 million deaths in the U.S. 
The site also highlights the "full and unconditional" pardon Biden issued to Fauci before leaving office, covering actions from Fauci dating back to 2014.
Cuomo's Pandemic Actions and Defense
The page also criticizes New York's pandemic response under Governor Andrew Cuomo, focusing on his March 25, 2020, executive order that forced nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients. 
The site accuses Cuomo's administration of attempting to cover up the consequences of this policy. In response, a spokesperson for Cuomo defended his actions, citing a Department of Justice Inspector General report that found Cuomo's actions were consistent with CDC guidelines. 
"More than 1 million Americans died as a result of the COVID pandemic, and our hearts break for the families of every person who lost a loved one, but unfortunately, as the DOJ IG confirmed, that pain has been weaponized and politicized for purely electoral purposes for years," Rich Azzopardi said in a statement. 

He also mentioned that investigations by the DOJ and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office had not found any wrongdoing.

President Donald Trump posted a photo on his Truth Social platform Friday, April 18, showing himself holding an image of Kilmar Abrego Garcia's left hand, which seemed to be digitally altered. 
Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador last month, is currently incarcerated in a prison there despite a 2019 court order that prohibited his removal to that country.

Trump's Case Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a father of three from Maryland, was deported to El Salvador in an "administrative error" according to Donald Trump administration lawyers. 
The deportation occurred despite the court order barring his removal, and the U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a lower court's decision that requires the administration to facilitate his return to the U.S. Abrego Garcia has not been charged with any crime, yet the Trump administration continues to claim that he is a member of the MS-13 gang.
The Image Trump Shared and the Alleged Alteration
The image shared by Donald Trump on Truth Social purports to show Kilmar Abrego Garcia's left hand, featuring tattoos that had previously been described by government officials: a marijuana leaf, a smiley face, a cross, and a skull. 
However, in the photo that Trump posted, the letters "MS-13" are visibly spelled out across the knuckles. 
This image has raised suspicions as Matt Novak of Gizmodo pointed out on BlueSky that a recent photo of Abrego Garcia, taken with Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), clearly shows his left hand without any "MS-13" markings.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, who traveled to El Salvador to help secure Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release, expressed his concern over the situation. 
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has refused to release Abrego Garcia, and Donald Trump has stated that the decision is ultimately up to Bukele. 
This has raised further questions, particularly as the U.S. government is reportedly paying El Salvador $6 million to imprison Abrego Garcia and over 250 other deported individuals. 
A 60 Minutes investigation revealed that approximately 75 percent of these individuals do not have a criminal record.

Trump's Push to Terminate Federal Workers Opposing His Agenda
On Friday, April 18, President Donald Trump announced a new initiative aimed at making it easier to terminate federal workers who oppose his administration's policies, the New York Post reported.
Trump stated that he wanted the federal government to be "run like a business" and emphasized that those who do not align with his political agenda should no longer hold government jobs.

The 'Schedule F' Rule and Its Impact on Federal Workers
The new rule, introduced by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), will reclassify key employees working on important policy matters as "Schedule Policy/Career." 
This reclassification removes civil service protections and makes these workers "at-will" employees, meaning they can be dismissed without the same level of job security. 
According to OPM estimates, this move could lead to the dismissal of approximately 50,000 workers, or about 2 percent of the federal workforce. The reason for these dismissals would be either poor performance or "subversion" of Donald Trump's directives.
Trump's Rationale for the New Rule
Donald Trump voiced his support for the rule on Truth Social, by stating, "Following my Day One Executive Order, the Office of Personnel Management will be issuing new Civil Service Regulations for career government employees. Moving forward, career government employees, working on policy matters, will be classified as 'Schedule Policy/Career,' and will be held to the highest standards of conduct and performance. If these government workers refuse to advance the policy interests of the President, or are engaging in corrupt behavior, they should no longer have a job. This is common sense, and will allow the federal government to finally be 'run like a business.' We must root out corruption and implement accountability in our Federal Workforce!"
Criticism of Bureaucratic Obstruction and Speed of Dismissals
Donald Trump and his allies have long accused career government officials of impeding or delaying the president's policies through bureaucracy. 
They argue that these officials act on their own agendas rather than adhering to the president's directives. Under the new rule, federal workers who do not align with the president's policies could be swiftly removed, bypassing the lengthy process that usually takes six months to a year before appeals. 
According to an OPM fact sheet, the new rule will allow for quicker dismissal of individuals "who put their own interests ahead of the American people's."
Statement from OPM on Accountability and Exemptions
Chuck Ezell, Acting Director of OPM, supported the rule, saying, "Policy-making federal employees have a tremendous amount of influence over our laws and our lives. Such employees must be held to the highest standards of conduct. Americans deserve a government that is both effective and accountable." 
However, the rule is not expected to affect federal employees who are directly involved in implementing policy, such as law enforcement agents. 
The policy clarifies that while federal employees do not need to share the president's political views, they must "faithfully implement the law and the administration's policies."

Reactions to Donald Trump's new initiative have sparked a wide range of opinions.

He began by humorously referencing First Lady Melania Trump's infamous jacket, saying, "things are so bad that Melania's jacket said, 'I'm starting to care!'"
