Elon Musk's SpaceX, along with partners Palantir and Anduril, emerged as the frontrunner for a key component of President Donald Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense initiative, Reuters reported. 
According to sources familiar with the matter, the group is vying to build essential parts of the missile defense system, which involves a network of satellites designed to detect and neutralize incoming missiles. 
The decision process is still in its early stages, with the Pentagon and Trump administration continuing discussions with various companies.

Details of the Golden Dome Project and SpaceX's Role
The Golden Dome project reportedly aims to create a defense shield capable of defending the U.S. from missile threats by using satellites to track and intercept incoming missiles. The SpaceX-led team is specifically focused on the "custody layer" of the initiative, a system of satellites that would detect missiles, track their trajectory and determine whether they are heading toward the U.S. 
"SpaceX has estimated the preliminary engineering and design work for the custody layer of satellites would cost between $6 billion and $10 billion," according to sources familiar with the project. 
The system would be backed by SpaceX's existing satellite fleet, which could potentially be repurposed for this critical defense function.
Trump's Involvement and Concerns Over Government Influence
President Donald Trump has been an influential supporter of the initiative, with Elon Musk serving as a special adviser focused on reducing government spending. 
However, the involvement of Musk and his companies has raised concerns among some lawmakers. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, voiced her worries about Musk's access to government contracts, saying, "When the richest man in the world can become a Special Government Employee and exert influence over the flow of billions of dollars of taxpayer money in government contracts to his companies, that's a serious problem." 
She has since introduced legislation to prevent federal contracts from being issued to companies owned by any special government employee like Musk.
Potential Benefits and Risks of SpaceX's Proposal
While SpaceX's existing infrastructure, including its Falcon 9 rockets and operational spy satellites, could give it an advantage in the Golden Dome project, some experts have questioned whether the company can effectively deliver the entire system. 
"It remains to be seen whether SpaceX and these tech companies will be able to pull any of this off," one source said. "They've never had to deliver on an entire system that the nation will need to rely on for its defense." 
The ambitious scale of the project has led to concerns about cost-effectiveness and feasibility.

On Friday, April 18, Donald Trump met with reporters alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz to discuss the tension between Russia and Ukraine.
"We want to get it done. We're talking about here, people dying. We're taking about over there," Trump said. "People are dying also, like on average 2,500 young people soldiers."
"They're not from America," he continued. "They're from anywhere else other than Ukraine and Russia. But we want to save these lives."

Ukraine has been a close ally to the United States, and during his first presidential term, Donald Trump's administration provided the nation approximately $1.5 billion in security assistance.
However, after the president's most recent meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, the U.S. placed a hold on military aid to the region.
"So it's 2,000 to 500 a week being killed in battle. It's a vicious battle with the best equipment, the best everything, and it is brutal," Trump revealed. "2,500 young people a week."
"Some of them not so young, actually. They're getting older," he noted. "They're going older by the month. But 2, 500 a week, and we're going to get it stopped, ideally."

Donald Trump later seemed to throw jabs at Volodymyr Zelensky, as the two had a heated exchange back in February.
"Now, if, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say, you're foolish, you are fools, you're horrible people, and we're gonna just take a pass. But hopefully, we won't have to do that," the real estate tycoon stated.
"We want to see it end. Think of it, every day, a lot of people are being killed as we talk about, you know, as they play games," he shared. "So we're not gonna take that, and we will see. I think we have a good chance of solving the problem, however."

Journalists wondered if Donald Trump would remove himself from the conflict.
"Are you prepared to walk away completely from these efforts and these talks?" a reporter asked.
"Well, I don't want to say that, but we want to see it end. We want to it end, yeah," the president stressed.

Donald Trump later attempted to blame the tension between the countries on previous presidents.
"Is Vladimir Putin stalling in your view, Mr. President?" a voice could be heard asking Trump.
"I hope not. I'm going to let you know about that soon, if he is. But I hope he's got a big force out there, a big force," the Republican stated.
"It's a war that should never have happened. It would have never happened if I were president," he continued.

Due to Donald Trump having a business background, he approached working with Ukraine and Russia as if it were a corporate deal.
"What do you need to see from both sides in order to keep negotiations going?" a journalist asked. "What do want to see [from] Russia and Ukraine?"
"I have to see — my whole life has been one big negotiation and I know when people are playing us and when they're not, and I have seen an enthusiasm to want to end it and I think I see that enthusiasm," Trump replied. "I think I see it from both sides."

"No, nobody's playing me. I'm trying to help," Donald Trump stressed.

While the Russo-Ukrainian war started in 2014, with the Russian annexation of Crimea, things escalated in 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Despite there being issues in the region during Donald Trump's first administration, he blamed Joe Biden for the conflict.
"You know, this was Biden's war," Trump declared. "By the way, by me getting involved, you know, they'll say, oh, it's Trump. This is not Trump's war, this is Biden's."
"This is a war that should have never happened. Okay? Think of it," he continued. "Those cities are crushed and crashed and all those beautiful steeples, the most beautiful in the world, actually considered the most beautiful in world, most of them are now smashed to smithereens, as they say, and lying on the ground in a million pieces."

Donald Trump later acknowledged the amount of damage that occurred in the past few years.
"Those towns are crushed, the whole place. It's so horrible," Trump stressed. "And millions of people are dead, far more than you think. That's one thing you're gonna get out of this war. You're gonna find out that your estimates are far lower than, it's far worse than people think."

Trump Moves Forward With Ukraine Mineral Deal

U.S. and Ukraine to Finalize Mineral Rights Agreement
After months of negotiations, the United States and Ukraine are set to sign a long-awaited mineral rights agreement next week, the New York Post reported.
The deal, which has been in the works for some time, is expected to be formalized on April 24, with the exact location to be announced later. 
President Donald Trump confirmed the progress on Thursday, April 17, in a statement from the Oval Office, highlighting the significance of the agreement.

Ukrainian Economy Minister Announces Progress on the Deal
Earlier in the week, Ukrainian Minister of the Economy Yulia Svyrydenko shared an update on the negotiations via a series of posts on X. 
"A positive new step has been made in the ongoing progress with the United States on the Economic Partnership Agreement and the creation of an investment fund for the reconstruction of Ukraine," Svyrydenko wrote on Wednesday, April 16.
She further explained, "Our technical teams have worked very thoroughly together on the agreement, and there is significant progress. Our legal staff has adjusted several items within the draft agreement."
Details of the Agreement and the Role of Mineral Resources
Ukraine's vast mineral resources have been central to the negotiations. The country holds large deposits of critical minerals such as titanium, lithium and uranium, which are necessary for the U.S. military, energy and nuclear power sectors. 
The agreement aims to create a framework for cooperation in these areas. Yulia Svyrydenko also stated, "We have now agreed with the American side to record this progress in the relevant memorandum of intent. We are preparing to complete the formalization of the agreement in the near future."
Previous Setbacks and Current Agreement's Similarities
The mineral deal nearly came to fruition during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the White House on February 28, but the negotiations were paused after a memorable, heated exchange between President Donald Trump, Zelensky and Vice President J.D. Vance.
The original terms proposed that Ukraine would allocate 50 percent of future revenues generated from national assets, including minerals and natural gas, into a joint fund. 
While specifics on the new deal were not disclosed on Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the new arrangement closely mirrors the terms agreed upon previously.
Zelensky's Willingness to Sign the Agreement and Strategic Implications
Volodymyr Zelensky repeatedly expressed his readiness to sign the deal, provided it is not perceived as repayment for military aid previously provided by the U.S. 
This agreement aims not only to bolster Ukraine's economy but also to strengthen ties with the U.S. in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion. 
The Donald Trump administration has prioritized mineral security, seeking deals with countries like Greenland and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as China holds a dominant position in access to rare earth minerals. 
The deal could play a significant role in Ukraine's economic recovery once the conflict with Russia concludes.

FDA Floats Ending Food Safety Inspections

The Food and Drug Administration may be gearing up for some major changes.

According to CBS News, the government agency is thinking of ending its routine safety inspection work after it allegedly covered up an E. coli outbreak in 15 states across America that killed one person.

According to multiple federal health officials, the Food and Drug Administration is looking to outsource the inspection work to state and local authorities. "There's so much work to go around. And us duplicating their work just doesn't make sense," one anonymous worker of the agency told CBS News.
However, Executive Director of the Association of Food and Drug Officials Steve Mandernach staunchly defended moving the routine checks over to the states. "FDA audits have determined states inspections to be high quality, and the costs show them to be a good economic value. There is significant cost to managing two systems also," he claimed in a statement.
While no plans have been finalized, an FDA spokesperson issued a statement on the matter: "The claim that the FDA is suspending routine food safety inspections is false. FDA is actively working to ensure continuity of operations during the reorganization period and remains committed to ensuring critical programs and inspections continue," they clarified.

Potential changes with the Food and Drug Administration come as an E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce affected people in 15 states in November 2024.
According to NBC News, a 9-year-old Indiana boy died of kidney failure linked to the bacteria and a 57-year-old Missouri woman also became sick from exposure.
Per an internal report obtained by the outlet, there was a sealed FDA investigation into the matter where the liable businesses were not named. "There were no public communications related to this outbreak," the document stated.
A representative for the agency defended the matter, claiming, "The FDA names firms when there is enough evidence linking an outbreak to a firm and there is actionable advice for consumers, as long as naming the firm is not legally prohibited. By the time investigators had confirmed the likely source, the outbreak had already ended and there was no actionable advice for consumers."

The alleged outbreak cover-up comes as Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. along with Donald Trump's administration have made sweeping cuts to the federal government agency.
"We no longer have all the mechanisms in place to learn from those situations and prevent the next outbreak from happening," the FDA's Former Public Engagement Leader Taryn Webb — who lost her job earlier this month — said, according to NBC News.

During a Friday, April 11, address to the remaining employees at the Food and Drug Administration, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly accused the entity of being a "a sock puppet" for the industries it regulates.
According to a recording of the meeting obtained by NBC News, the member of Donald Trump's administration went on a rant about how the "deep state is real."
"President Trump always talks about the deep state and the media disparages him and says that he is paranoid or a conspiracy theorist," Kennedy said to the staffers. "But the deep state is real and it's not George Soros or Bill Gates and a bunch of nefarious individuals sitting together in a room and plotting the destruction of humanity. It's more insidious than that. It's institutional pressures."

Nate Silver predicts Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York will be the frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic nomination.
While discussing his pick in the Substack with "GD Politics" podcast host Galen Druke, the data expert's guest supported Silver's choice with a recent Yale University poll showing the congresswoman with one of the highest net favorability ratings among the left.
"I think there's a lot of points in her favor at this very moment," Druke said. "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has broad appeal across the Democratic Party. I think equally important is the fact that she has very fervent support. I think a lot of people are going to run in 2028 and it's going to be a contest for attention and getting those sort of people who might be in your boat to turn out and stay with you through thick and thin."
"I agree with everything," Silver added, adding he didn't know if Ocasio-Cortez was "sure to run."

Galen Druke also pointed to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's nationwide "Fighting Oligarchy Tour" with Senator Bernie Sanders as an indicator that she may be thinking about a possible presidential campaign.
"New York Democrats are actually a pretty moderate bloc," Nate Silver added of her electability and called the liberal a "canny politician" and very "charismatic."

Nate Silver also named Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as someone who could be in the running for the nomination along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
"In the past three nomination races, you kind of have this compromise candidate where you have the moderates and you have the progressives and you get kind of somewhere in the middle," Silver said. "If you're not going to pick an AOC … then maybe go to someone who's fully moderate, 'electable.'"

Despite losing the 2024 election to Donald Trump, both Nate Silver and Galen Druke didn't completely rule out former Vice President Kamala Harris running for the White House once again.
"Kamala Harris has universal name recognition," Druke said. "I think that she could go some way to clear the field if she decided early to get in. I think we don't yet know how big of an electoral flop she is."

Swastikas Found on New York GOP Headquarters
On Thursday, April 17, the New York GOP's Albany headquarters was defaced with swastikas in what party leaders and police are calling a "vile act of political hatred," the New York Post reported.
The Nazi symbols were found taped to the doors and windows of the GOP building, with Albany police investigating the incident as a case of vandalism and political intimidation.

GOP's Response to the Incident
New York GOP Chair Ed Cox condemned the act in a statement, calling it an attack on both the party and broader democratic values. "A vandal duct taped swastikas to our doors and windows – symbols of genocidal evil, meant to intimidate and silence. This is not only an attack on our party, it is also an attack on the values of civil discourse, democracy, and decency," he said.
The swastikas, printed on white paper, were taped to various spots on the building, including the door, windows and signage. 
Another sheet read, "If this is not what you stand for, prove it."
Political Leaders Condemn the Vandalism
In the wake of the incident, several political figures, including state Democrats, condemned the vandalism. 
NY Governor Kathy Hochul described the act as "unacceptable," tweeting, "No one should ever resort to violence or vandalism to make a political point." 

Similarly, Attorney General Letitia James stated that New Yorkers must "reject these hateful acts," calling for a united stance against such actions. "Defacing any institution, across any political party, house of worship, or anywhere else with antisemitic hate or hate of any kind is wrong," James wrote on X, adding that all New Yorkers should reject such acts "to the fullest extent."
Calls for Full Prosecution
House Republican Leadership Chair Elise Stefanik called for the individual responsible for the act to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. 
"We must ensure that this vicious criminal who perpetrated this heinous crime is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Stefanik said, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action against the vandals.

The incident has sparked a range of reactions on social media. 
One user on X commented, "This is a clear violation of free speech and democracy. It's essential for all of us, no matter our political views, to condemn such acts of hate."

"I mean, there's two ways you can do the Oval Office: the way I did it, honestly, or, like Gretchen Whitmer, who held up a bunch of binders in front of her face," Maher continued. "I should be a hero for being one of the people who got inside the inner sanctum and was able to say to this person — who knows how much he ever hears anything that's not coming from the cult — and say those things and stick to my guns."

Bill Maher claimed he didn't exactly play nice during his chat with Donald Trump.
"I'm not pulling punches, either on my show or when I was with him or after," the comedian explained to Harvey Levin and Mark Geragos about his dinner with the right-winger. "I'm proud that I was able to go into the White House and say to the President of the United States, look him in the eye and say, 'You're scaring people. You know, it doesn't bother you that you're scaring so many of your own citizens?'"

While Bill Maher did reach across the aisle, the stand-up star made it clear he is not a loyal follower of The Apprentice star and condemned people who cannot speak to others with political differences.
"I had the opportunity to go to the White House and talk to the president and not give up my principles. It seems like nobody noticed that," Maher said on the podcast. "I didn't go MAGA. I had the opportunity to talk to Donald Trump and say things to him that maybe he never hears, literally to speak truth to power. I shouldn't take that opportunity?"

Still, Bill Maher gave Donald Trump a pat on the back for how he treated him over Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
"I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him," the television personality said during the Friday, April 11, episode of his late-night show about Trump. "And honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump. That's just how it went down. Make of it what you will. Me? I feel it's emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days."

During his two-part interview on Fox Noticias, which aired on Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday, April 16, host Rachel Campos-Duffy asked Donald Trump if he believed Jill Biden was Joe Biden's "autopen" when he signed various pardons.
"No, I don't think so," Donald said, but later noted "she was certainly involved because he gave her the last meeting to preside over with the Cabinet."

Since losing to Joe Biden during the 2020 election, Donald Trump has been hypercritical of the former vice president.
"They [the Biden administration] had a lot of bad people. They had a lot of radical left lunatics in there, and I think he was perfect. He was perfect for them because he didn't have a clue," Donald alleged.

While there have been concerns about Joe Biden's health, Donald Trump stressed that, unlike his competitor, he has a "good heart, a good soul," and "overall, I think I'm in very — I felt I was in very good shape."  
"I think it's a pretty well-known test. Whatever it is, I got every one — I got it all right… I've taken the cognitive test, I think, four times and I've gotten nothing wrong. That's what the American people want," the convicted felon stated about the recent test he apparently aced. "Biden refused to take it, Kamala [Harris] refused to take it."

As Wonderwall previously reported, Donald Trump's annual physical was recently released.
"President [Donald] Trump remains in excellent health, exhibiting robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function," Capt Sean P. Barbabella wrote in a report published on Sunday, April 13.

"Cognitive function, assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), was normal with a score of 30 out of 30," Dr. Barbabella continued.

The ad may be hilarious, but the topic it's promoting is no laughing matter: The Saturday Night Live alum's antics depict the choice and flexibility consumers have while shopping with PayPal and also highlight PayPal's easy, fast and rewarding payment options like the Buy Now Pay Later feature. You can truly "pay your own way" — anytime, anywhere!

"It all started with a song about paying where you want. And here we are – crooning about paying the way you want. Credit card? Sure! Debit? Go for it. Pay later? Why, of course! Monopoly money? Not quite, but I'm working on it," Ferrell says. Model-actor William Levy — who made it to the finals on Season 14 of Dancing With the Stars in 2012 — was arrested for disorderly intoxication and trespassing following an incident at a high-end Florida restaurant on Monday, April 14. He was taken into custody and booked at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and released the following day after paying a $500 bond.
The Telenovela star told reporters outside the jail following his release, "I was having a drink with one of my friends … and they started arguing with another guy and I got in front him to try to deescalate the situation."

Myrtle Beach Police arrested Zachery Ty Bryan on charges of second-degree domestic violence on January 1 after the Home Improvement star assaulted off-and-on love Johnnie Faye Cartwright at the home they share.
A police report notes that Cartwright "stated that she was assaulted" by Bryan and that the two "live together and have children in common."
Cartwright claimed the actor "choked her and punched her in the face multiple times" and that "others" were "inside the home during the incident."

In February, Bryan pleaded guilty to the domestic violence charges and was sentenced to probation.
It was the third time he was arrested on domestic violence charges and his third arrest in about a year following two DUI arrests in 2024.

Ugly Betty star Eric Mabius was arrested for battery and resisting arrest after fighting two women at an Irish-themed bar in Fernandina Beach, Fla., on February 20.
According to a police report reviewed by People, Mabius was "extremely intoxicated and kept trying to yell at everyone" before knocking two women to the ground. A witness told police that he "got on top" of one woman, "pulling her hair" and "ripping a handful … from her scalp" until other patrons separated them.
He reportedly became "more belligerent" when police arrived and refused to follow their "simple commands," prompting them to arrest him.
He later pleaded not guilty.

Lindsay Lohan's father, Michael Lohan, was booked at the Palm Beach County Jail in Palm Beach, Florida, on March 16 after he violated his probation by getting arrested in Texas the previous month.
The former reality star — who's been on probation in the Sunshine State since 2022 when he was convicted of patient brokering at a rehab facility — was arrested in Harris County, Texas, in February 2025 on charges of continuous violence against the family after he allegedly went to the home where his estranged wife, Kate Major, lives with their two sons and assaulted the former tabloid journalist. His lawyer insisted to TMZ that he "did not violate probation" and that it was actually Major who assaulted him.

According to reports, the trouble started when Kerley approached an active police investigation while attempting to locate his car, which was parked nearby. An argument broke out when officers told him to go around, prompting a shoving match that ended with police tasing the sprinter. He later pleaded not guilty.

"We are all afraid," Lisa Murkowski shared while attending a summit of nonprofit leaders in Anchorage on Monday, April 14.
"It's quite a statement, but we are in a time and a place where I certainly have not been here before," she continued. "And I'll tell ya, I'm oftentimes very anxious myself about using my voice, because retaliation is real. And that's not right."

Over the years, Lisa Murkowski has been considered a moderate figure within the Republican Party.
And she made it clear she will "use my voice to the best of my ability," as Donald Trump continues to align himself with other members of her party.

The Alaskan politician admitted she is feeling the shock of living under a second Donald Trump administration.
"It is head-spinning," Lisa Murkowski said about the current political climate. "It seems that just when you've made a little bit of progress on one issue that had caused so much anxiety, there's another one."
"It is as hard as anything I have been engaged in, in the 20-plus years I've been in the Senate," she added.

White House assistant press secretary Taylor Rogers addressed Lisa Murkowski's comments in a recent interview.
"President Trump's only retribution is success and historic achievements for the American people," Rogers told the New York Post.

Lisa Murkowski later attempted to validate her fears.
"I think it's important the concerns continue to be raised rather than letting the fatigue of the chaos grind you down," she said.
However, National Review writer Dan McLaughlin shut down her claims.
"Nobody in the whole federal government is less afraid than Lisa Murkowski, who has survived multiple primary challenges, got re-elected as a third-party write-in candidate after losing one, and has had her state rewrite its election laws just to protect her," McLaughlin said, according to the New York Post.

Donald Trump's allies were vocal about their disagreement with Lisa Murkowski.
"I think it's a good thing that our politicians are afraid of the voters," Townhall columnist Kurt Schlichter wrote on X.

With several faith leaders and prominent Christian figures in attendance, Donald Trump took to the podium to emphasize what a staunch advocate he is for their community.
"This is really — I hope — going to be one of the great Easters ever because we have something going that I don't think this country has seen in 100 years. And as we gather with family and friends, we'll not forget the true source of our joy and our strength: America has put our trust in God," the Republican preached. "It will always be 'In God We Trust.' We will never change that."

Donald Trump's address then turned to the people who have been critical of the religion and it's role in government and policy.
"You know there's a movement to change it," he claimed. "It won't happen. We won't let that happen. Can you imagine a movement to change that?"
Trump then called out his predecessors for not standing up for Christians during their time in office: "We had nobody fighting for our Christians in other parts of the world, that were being so incredibly destroyed, killed, injured, hurt. But they died, so many died. You wouldn't think that could happen in this time — in this modern time," he alleged.

After expressing his dismay at the alleged prejudice against Christians, Donald Trump revealed he put together a Justice Department task force and established the White House Faith Office to protect the religion.
"You don't hear about that very much, but there is anti-Christian bias," the right-winger noted. "With God's help we can overcome every challenge, triumph over every evil and restore the spirit of faith in the United States for generations to come. We have a very simple slogan: 'Make America Great Again,' and that's exactly what we're doing."

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Director of the White House Faith Office Jennifer Korn emphasized how important the Easter holiday is to Donald Trump's administration and how they "wanted to start out the week very on the right foot."
"President Trump released that proclamation to make sure that we're honoring Easter with the observance that it deserves," she said.
In a personal proclamation from the businessman through the office, he made it clear he and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, will be partaking in holiday celebrations throughout the weekend.
"This Holy Week, Melania and I join in prayer with Christians celebrating the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ — the living son of God who conquered death, freed us from sin and unlocked the gates of heaven for all of humanity," he said.

A reported whistleblower, Gary Shapley, who has accused the Justice Department of covering up the Hunter Biden tax investigation, is set to be promoted by President Donald Trump to the role of acting commissioner of the IRS, the New York Post shared. 
"Congratulations to my friend Gary Shapley on being named Acting Commissioner of the IRS," Shapley's lawyer, Tristan Leavitt, wrote on X on Tuesday, April 15, in response to the news. 
Leavitt added, "Couldn't think of a single better person, both as a dedicated leader and as a whistleblower who has seen the agency's weaknesses and had the courage to speak up about them."

Shapley's Career and New Role at the IRS
Gary Shapley, who was recently promoted to senior adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, will now replace Melanie Krause as acting commissioner of the IRS. 
A memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal confirms that Shapley will hold the position until Billy Long, Donald Trump's nominee for the permanent role, is confirmed by the Senate. 
A Treasury Department spokesperson praised Shapley's extensive career, noting, "Gary is a long-tenured civil servant who has dedicated the last 15 years of his professional life to the IRS." 
However, the spokesperson did not confirm the reports regarding Shapley's promotion.
Shapley's Reputation and Contributions to the IRS
The Treasury spokesperson continued, emphasizing Gary Shapley's integrity and dedication, "Gary has proven his honesty and devotion to enforcing the law without fear or favor, even at great cost to his own career." 
The spokesperson also expressed confidence that Shapley would be an asset to the IRS, particularly in the ongoing efforts to rethink and reform the agency. Shapley's promotion comes on Tax Day, the annual deadline for income tax filings in the U.S.
Shapley and Ziegler's Role in the Hunter Biden Investigation
Gary Shapley, along with IRS special agent Joseph Ziegler, was removed from the Hunter Biden case in December 2022 after they raised concerns about obstruction and delays in the investigation. 
They testified before Congress, alleging that the DOJ and Delaware US Attorney David Weiss were hindering their efforts. 
They also claimed that Weiss' office restricted their access to critical files and blocked interviews with Biden family members.
Hunter Biden's Legal Troubles and Presidential Pardon
Following Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler's allegations, Hunter Biden was charged with several felonies and misdemeanors related to failing to pay over $1.4 million in taxes. 
Hunter pleaded guilty to all charges in September 2024 and was pardoned by his father that December.

David Hogg Plans to Challenge Incumbent Democratic Officials
David Hogg, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), is setting aside millions to unseat incumbent Democratic lawmakers. 
Hogg, who assumed the role in February, plans to spend $20 million targeting Democrats in primary races. He will use this money to support candidates backed by his grassroots organization, Leaders We Deserve, which aims to elect young progressives to Congress and state legislatures. 
The organization's goal is to defeat the far-right agenda and advance a more progressive vision for the future, but it may not go over as well as the outspoken activist anticipates.

Hogg's Strategy and the Blowback He Anticipates
David Hogg acknowledged the potential backlash from his decision to challenge fellow Democrats while holding a high-ranking position in the DNC, which traditionally focuses on supporting Democrats over Republicans.
"This is going to anger a lot of people," he said in a recent interview. Hogg predicted that his actions would lead to "a smear campaign against me" in an attempt to ruin his reputation and stop him from pursuing these efforts. 
"People say they want change in the Democratic Party, but really they want change so long as it doesn't potentially endanger their position of power," he added.
Internal DNC Tensions and Neutrality Policy
David Hogg's decision to involve himself directly in primary races is creating a rift within the DNC. 
At a private meeting last month, a "neutrality policy" was introduced, urging top party officials to refrain from any actions that could undermine their impartiality. 
This policy applied both to their professional roles within the DNC and their personal activities. Everyone signed the policy — except Hogg. His refusal to sign the neutrality pledge has raised questions about his commitment to the party's broader unity and strategy.
DNC Leadership's Response to Hogg's Actions
DNC Chair Ken Martin commented on David Hogg's efforts, defending the longstanding party position that primary voters, not the national party, should determine the candidates for the general election. 
"In order to ensure we are as effective as possible at electing Democrats to office, it is the D.N.C.'s longstanding position that primary voters — not the national party — determine their Democratic candidates for the general election," Martin said.
He also expressed appreciation for Hogg's passion and advocacy in his role as DNC Vice Chair, recognizing Hogg's service to the party both in an official capacity and through his outside efforts.
Criticism from Party Members and Political Observers
Critics within the party have voiced concerns about David Hogg's actions. Steve Schale, a veteran Democratic strategist, pointed out the challenges the party faces in battleground states, noting that Democrats have lost significant ground in these regions. 
"Today, of the 767 counties that make up the 10 battleground states over the last four POTUS cycles, Dems have lost ground in 703," Schale observed. 

Similarly, Matt Bennett from Third Way expressed disappointment, noting that Hogg's behavior showed a failure to transition from activist to a more diplomatic role within the DNC. "This is insane behavior from a DNC official, especially as Trump takes a chainsaw to our democracy," Bennett said.

Donald Trump's administration called Kilmar Abrego Garcia's detainment "an administrative error," but they have yet to make an effort to bring the Maryland man back to the U.S.



Chris Van Hollen accused the Trump administration of "abducting" Garcia. He then traveled to El Salvador to personally conduct a "welfare check."
On Thursday, April 17, Van Hollen said that he was stopped at a checkpoint and denied entry into the El Salvador prison holding Abrego Garcia.
"They stopped us because they are under orders not to allow us to proceed," he said in a press conference.

Toman Homan shared his outrage on Fox & Friends.
"He wasn't abducted," Homan told Lawrence Jones on Wednesday, April 16. "He is an MS-13 gang member. Classified as a terrorist. That was removed from this country. So we got rid of a dangerous person, an El Salvadorian national, returned to the country of El Salvador to his home."

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was accused of having ties to MS-13, but he was stripped of his due process rights before a formal trial could take place.
"We removed him from the United States — a public safety threat — exactly what should have happened," Tom Homan alleged.
"I'm just as disgusted that any congressional representative is going to run [to] El Salvador to his aid when yesterday I read in his state [Maryland], an illegal alien charged with murder was released back into the community and an ICE detainer wasn't honored and ICE had to go find him," he said.

Despite Tom Homan's claims, the Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump's team must bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the U.S.
"Tonight, the rule of law prevailed," Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, one of Abrego Garcia's attorneys, said in a statement at the time. "The Supreme Court upheld the District Judge's order that the government has to bring Kilmar home. Now they need to stop wasting time and get moving."
The Trump admin has so far ignored the order.

When the show's host, Martha MacCallum, questioned Trey Gowdy about Donald Trump and his administration not facilitating the return of Maryland's Kilmar Ábrego García after the Supreme Court's order, the right-wing commentator seemed to stray from the commander-in-chief.
"I think what they ought to do is probably follow the judge's order and the Supreme Court decision, which used the word 'facilitate,'" he said. "Also in that opinion, Martha, were the words 'accidental,' 'mistake' and 'illegal.' I mean, those are not three good words you want in a Supreme Court decision."

Trey Gowdy did make it clear he agreed with Donald Trump on his strict stance on immigration. However, he emphasized how the businessman should listen to the courts.
"So, look, I don't want the guy in the United States, although I will say this: If the press secretary's facts are right, it should be a pretty easy conviction," the reporter pointed out. "Do I have more confidence in U.S. Prisons or El Salvadorian prisons? U. S. Prisons. I don't know if you remember Pablo Escobar or not in Colombia, but that was more like the sanctuary at Kiowa or the Ritz-Carlton. That's not a real prison."
"So I have confidence in the U.S. Prosecutors. I have more confidence in the U.S. Prison system. If the president doesn't agree with that — and he may not — then bring him back and then remove him to another country, appeal the removal order," Gowdy continued.

On Monday, April 14, Donald Trump welcomed El Salvador President Nayib Bukele to the White House. When the foreign leader was pressed about organizing Kilmar Ábrego García's return, his response was alarming.
"How can I return him to the United States? Like if I smuggle him into the United States?" Bukele said, according to NBC News. "Of course I'm not going to do it. The question is preposterous."

On Wednesday, April 16, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt touched upon the situation. She also addressed Democratic Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen's decision to travel to El Salvador to help return Kilmar Ábrego García.
"It's appalling and sad that Senator Van Hollen and the Democrats applauding his trip to El Salvador today are incapable of having any shred of common sense or empathy for their own constituents and our citizens," she said.

"We're going to announce a series of new studies to identify precisely what the environmental toxins are that are causing [autism]," Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at a press conference on Wednesday, April 16.
"This has not been done before," he added.
Kennedy views ultrasound scans, mold, pesticides, food chemicals, medicines and air and water contamination as "factors" he's interested in exploring.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has previously described autism as an "epidemic" and a public health threat, a stance that seems contradictory given that Elon Musk — another one of Donald Trump's allies and a person on the spectrum — is one of the most successful businessmen in the world.

"This is catastrophic for our country," Kennedy said. "We know it's from environmental exposure."
"Autism destroys families, and more importantly, it destroys our greatest resources, our children," he claimed.

On Wednesday, Kennedy confirmed he wants to "remove the taboo [so] that people will know they can research and follow the science no matter what it says, without any kind of fear that they're going to be censored."

Robert F. Kennedy later hinted at pollution being a leading factor in the rise in autism diagnoses.
"Clearly there are industries, this is coming from an environmental toxin," he alleged. "And somebody made a profit by putting that environmental toxin into our air, our water, or our medicines, our food — and it's to their benefit."

In a recent cabinet meeting, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Donald Trump how the Health and Human Services department would approach neurodevelopmental conditions: "We've launched a massive testing and research effort that's going to involve hundreds of scientists from around the world," he said. "By September, we will know what has caused the autism epidemic, and we'll be able to eliminate those exposures."

The CDC reports that one in every 31 kids under 8-years-old is diagnosed with autism.
In response to the study, Autism Speaks called for "deeper, sustained investment in autism research, not only to understand its causes, but also to support the growing number of people diagnosed today."

The Autism Society of America later pushed back on Robert F. Kennedy's rhetoric.
The organization stressed that the CDC data "does not signal an 'epidemic' as narratives are claiming — it reflects diagnostic progress, and an urgent need for policy decisions rooted in science and the immediate needs of the Autism community."

A report by The Washington Post revealed that Martin appeared on Russian state TV outlets like RT and Sputnik more than 150 times between August 2016 and April 2024. 

Despite the significance of these appearances, Martin failed to list them when asked by the Senate Judiciary Committee to disclose all media interviews.

The investigation noted that Martin participated in these broadcasts regularly as a guest commentator, yet he did not include this information in his official Senate questionnaire ahead of his confirmation hearing.

According to Axios, Donald Trump made it clear he did not want Elon Musk to attend the Pentagon-hosted meeting because of the tech entrepreneur's business entanglements in China.
"What the f*** is Elon doing there?" the right-wing leader allegedly said about the situation, according to an anonymous top official. "Make sure he doesn't go."

With Elon Musk's special government job soon ending, a source claimed Donald Trump still cares for the billionaire but is ready to distance himself when it comes to work.
"POTUS still very much loves Elon, but there are some red lines," an insider told Axios. "Elon has a lot of business in China and he has good relations there and this briefing just wasn't the right thing."

"These are very fundamental policy changes," Jerome Powell said of Donald Trump's plans during an event for the Economic Club of Chicago on Wednesday, April 16. "There isn't a modern experience of how to think about this."
"The level of the tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated," he added.

Jerome Powell noted that Donald Trump's hopes to "make America great again" might not align with what the nation needs.
"We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension," Powell said.

While Donald Trump hopes to bring manufacturing jobs and businesses back to the U.S., economic experts don't envision that occurring.
"Unemployment is likely to go up as the economy slows," Jerome Powell predicted.
According to the investment banker, inflation "in all likelihood" will increase as a portion of the burden caused by tariffs will be "paid by the public."

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee shared a similar sentiment in New York.
"A tariff is like a negative supply shock," Goolsbee said, according to CNN. "That's a stagflationary shock, which is to say it makes both sides of the Fed's dual mandate worse at the same time."
"Prices are going up while jobs are being lost and growth is coming down, and there is not a generic playbook for how the central bank should respond to a stagflationary shock," he continued.

Jerome Powell said if stagflation becomes a reality, "we would consider how far the economy is from each goal, and the potentially different time horizons over which those respective gaps would be anticipated to close."
"We understand that elevated levels of unemployment or inflation can be damaging and painful for communities, families, and businesses," he added.

The Donald Trump administration is considering an extraordinary move to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, sources familiar with the matter revealed. 
This decision comes after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) visited the university's headquarters, CNN reported.
A final decision on whether to revoke the university's tax-exempt status is expected soon. The administration has already withheld more than $2 billion in funding from Harvard, which has resisted the White House's policy demands, arguing that private universities should have the right to determine their own teaching practices.

Trump Criticizes Harvard and Threatens Action
President Donald Trump recently raised the possibility of targeting Harvard University for its noncompliance with the administration's policies. 
"Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting 'Sickness?' Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!" he wrote on Truth Social.
His remarks seemingly echo ongoing tensions between the university and the administration, particularly around the portrayal of a campaign against antisemitism.
Administration and IRS Review of Harvard's Status
The IRS, a bureau under the Treasury Department, has the authority to revoke tax-exempt statuses under federal law. 
Gary Shapley, whom Donald Trump appointed as acting IRS commissioner this week, holds the power to rescind the university's tax-exempt status if the IRS determines that Harvard violated the rules governing non-profit organizations. 
Typically, the revocation of such a status is rare and follows a detailed review of potential violations, including political activity which non-profits are prohibited from engaging in.
Historical Context of Tax-Exempt Status Revocation
Historically, the IRS has revoked tax exemptions in rare instances, such as in the Ronald Reagan 1980s when a Christian college lost its status for having a racially discriminatory admissions policy. 
R. William Snyder, a professor at George Mason University, commented, "To my knowledge, this is the first time an administration has tried something like this," adding that revoking a university's tax-exempt status for reasons of disagreement with its educational practices was unprecedented.
Implications of Harvard Revocation and What's Next
Nina Olson, who served as the independent national taxpayer advocate within the IRS from 2001 to 2019, explained that the revocation process typically begins with a full audit. 
"The entity would first receive a notice from the IRS, informing them about the audit and requesting documents for the agency to review," Olson said. 
This process can take months and involves multiple stages of dialogue and document submission. If the IRS moves forward with revocation, nonprofit organizations have the right to challenge the decision in court, potentially all the way to the Supreme Court.
As for whether the IRS is looking into other universities' tax-exempt statuses, it remains unclear. However, the 2.0 Donald Trump administration has previously threatened to cut funding to various colleges unless they change their policies.

"If Harvard cannot verify it is in full compliance with its reporting requirements, the university will lose the privilege of enrolling foreign students," Kristi Noem said in a Wednesday, April 16, letter to Harvard, according to CBS News.
"Harvard bending the knee to antisemitism — driven by its spineless leadership — fuels a cesspool of extremist riots and threatens our national security," the right winger continued. "With anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology poisoning its campus and classrooms, Harvard's position as a top institution of higher learning is a distant memory. America demands more from universities entrusted with taxpayer dollars."

"Harvard will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. We continue to stand by that statement. We will continue to comply with the law and expect the Administration to do the same," the college said, according to CBS News.
The school's president, Alan Garber, also added, "The University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights."

After Harvard failed to implement the White House's policies, the administration canceled $2 billion in federal funding.
According to CNN, the school has also refuted the right-wing leadership's demands to get rid of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, ban masks during campus protests, begin merit-based hiring and admissions reforms as well as cut back on the power of staffers and administrators.

Prior to the funding being pulled, Education Secretary Linda McMahon spoke out against Harvard's handling of student protestors, claiming they were "promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry."

"Harvard can right these wrongs and restore itself to a campus dedicated to academic excellence and truth-seeking, where all students feel safe on its campus," she said.

California Sues Trump

On Wednesday, April 16, the Governor of California and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the state would be suing the President of the United States over his newly imposed tariffs and their negative effect on the region's economy.

California officials Gavin Newsom and Rob Bonta revealed they would be the first state to sue Donald Trump for his sweeping duties on goods outside the United States to protect citizens who could lose billions without worldwide trade.
"President Trump's unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses and our economy — driving up prices and threatening jobs," Newsom explained in a statement via Politico. "We're standing up for American families who can't afford to let the chaos continue."
Aside from working for the West Coast region, Bonta has also been collaborating with other states to take legal action against Trump for his other controversial policies. "The president's chaotic and haphazard implementation of tariffs is not only deeply troubling, it's illegal," the lawyer explained.

Donald Trump and his administration quickly fired back at the legal move from Gavin Newsom and the state of California.
"Instead of focusing on California's rampant crime, homelessness and unaffordability, Gavin Newsom is spending his time trying to block President Trump's historic efforts to finally address the national emergency of our country's persistent goods trade deficits," White House representative Kush Desai claimed in a Wednesday, April 16, statement to Politico.

In the lawsuit, Gavin Newsom and Rob Bonta accuse Donald Trump of abusing the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, which allows the commander-in-chief to impose tariffs without congressional approval. The two left-wing politicians allege Trump does not possess the authority to levy tariffs under the law.
The Republican leader has stood behind using the act, claiming the country's trade deficits with other nations pose a "national emergency."

Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump have long been at odds. After wildfires ravaged California at the start of the year, the former mayor of San Francisco slammed The Apprentice star for withholding aid to the state over political differences.

"In the face of one of the worst natural disasters in America's history, this moment underscores the critical need for partnership, a shared commitment to facts and mutual respect — values that enable civil discourse, effective governance and meaningful action," Newsom said in a statement about the difficulties of working with Trump. "It's nonsense. But it's also insulting."
