Donald Trump's administration is claiming Los Angeles' sanctuary city policy bars federal law enforcements from doing their job. "Sanctuary City laws and policies are designed to deliberately impede federal immigration officers' ability to carry out their responsibilities in those jurisdictions," the lawsuit alleges. "The Los Angeles Ordinance and other policies intentionally discriminate against the Federal Government by treating federal immigration authorities differently." The suit also alleges the city is "picking and choosing which federal criminal laws it will follow" and that they are violating the Constitution's Supremacy Clause.

United States Attorney General Pam Bondi addressed the lawsuit and claimed the policy is influencing citizens to incite violence against law enforcement. "Sanctuary policies were the driving cause of the violence, chaos and attacks on law enforcement that Americans recently witnessed in Los Angeles," she said in a statement. "Jurisdictions like Los Angeles that flout federal law by prioritizing illegal aliens over American citizens are undermining law enforcement at every level — it ends under President [Donald] Trump."

In June, Donald Trump sent nearly 4,000 National Guard members and around 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles to curb anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests. California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the Republican leader for the action. In order to calm the tensions, Mayor Karen Bass issued a curfew for the city. "We have had to have a curfew in the city because we want to make sure that the downtown neighborhood and all the other neighborhoods are safe," she said in a statement. "But let me be very clear, we want peace to come to our city. The peace that we need to have happen needs to begin in Washington and we need to stop the raids."
