Trump's Longstanding Feud with Goldberg
Donald Trump's criticism of Jeffrey Goldberg stems from a disputed 2020 story where Goldberg accused the president of calling U.S. war dead "suckers" and "losers."The story ignited fierce backlash against Trump, though it was later criticized for lacking solid evidence. Additionally, Trump referenced an incident in which Goldberg was mistakenly added to a Signal group chat discussing Yemen airstrikes. Trump mocked Goldberg's involvement in both controversies, calling them "fictional stories."
"Jeffrey is bringing with him Michael Scherer and Ashley Parker, not exactly pro-Trump writers, either, to put it mildly! The story they are writing, they have told my representatives, will be entitled, 'The Most Consequential President of this Century.' I am doing this interview out of curiosity, and as a competition with myself, just to see if it's possible for The Atlantic to be 'truthful,'" Trump said.
The Upcoming Interview and Trump's Challenge
Donald Trump acknowledged that Jeffrey Goldberg and his team were not typically aligned with his views, but he welcomed the opportunity to challenge them."Are they capable of writing a fair story on 'TRUMP'? The way I look at it, what can be so bad – I WON!" Trump remarked.
This interview will be his third print interview since reclaiming power in January.
The Disputed 'Suckers and Losers' Story
Regarding the disparaged American war dead story, the report also claimed Donald Trump blamed rain for the cancelation of a cemetery visit near Paris in 2018, saying the helicopter could not fly, which was contradicted by Navy records.Despite this, Jeffrey Goldberg's article remained uncorrected, deepening the rift between Trump and the journalist.
Signal Gate
Jeffrey Goldberg made headlines in March when he revealed that Donald Trump's national security adviser, Mike Waltz, mistakenly added him to a Signal group chat where senior administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, discussed plans for airstrikes on Yemen's Houthi fighters. This further fueled tensions between Trump and Goldberg as the two continue to clash publicly.Trump's upcoming interview with Goldberg is set to be a key moment, as it offers a platform for both men to address their differences and potentially shed light on Trump's view of his time in office and how he believes his legacy will be portrayed — although many analysts predict the sit-down will quickly escalate into chaos.
