According to the New York Post, Gretchen Whitmer was supposed to be in Washington, D.C., for a one-on-one meeting with Donald Trump. However, the gathering became a photo opportunity for the Republican leader to sign orders about an investigation of two first-term administration aides who were not Trump supporters while the leftist politician stood to the side."We're honored to have Gretchen Whitmer," Trump told reporters in attendance in the Oval Office before calling her a "very good person."

Typically a critic of Donald Trump, Gretchen Whitmer also claimed she sees eye-to-eye with him on goods produced in the United States."I understand the motivation behind the tariffs and I can tell you here's where President Trump and I do agree," she explained in a speech ahead of her meeting with the commander-in-chief via the New York Post. "We do need to make more stuff in America."
The former member of the Michigan senate's office clarified her visit with Trump, claiming Whitmer was put in the Oval Office "without any notice" and the meeting was "not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made."

People on the left were outraged by Gretchen Whitmer's trip to see Donald Trump. During a Thursday, April 10, broadcast CNN senior reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere labeled the move a "huge embarrassment" for the left-wing politician."She [Governor Whitmer] went for this meeting with the president and he used her as a prop," he explained.
"This does not look like the politics of resistance," journalist Audie Cornish chimed in.

During an education event in Michigan on Thursday, April 10, Gretchen Whitmer stanchly defended herself from the backlash."You want some results, you have to show up," she made clear via Fox 2 Detroit. "I did have the opportunity to chat with the president as you heard him say some great things about Selfridge, about protecting The Great Lakes and also, the primary purpose to talk about the ice storm and the recovery that is ongoing and the need for federal resources."
However, the 53-year-old made it clear she's still in the opposition party. "My presence was not an endorsement of any of the actions taken or the comments that were made. I was going in for a meeting and they walked me into a press conference," she added. "I disagree with a lot of the stuff that was said and the actions that were taken, but I stayed in the room because I needed to make the case for Michigan and that's my job."

Gretchen Whitmer and Donald Trump have a rocky past. In 2020, after a plot to kidnap former Michigan state senator was thwarted, Whitmer claimed the right-wing leader was "complicit" in the militia's plan to harm her.Trump fired back at her claim, writing on X, "Rather than say thank you, she calls me a White Supremacist — while [Joe] Biden and Democrats refuse to condemn Antifa, Anarchists, Looters and Mobs that burn down Democrat run cities."
