Donald Trump was called out over a false statement he made.According to an investigation by CNN, the current president incorrectly claimed gas prices were as low as "$1.99" in "five states" across the country. However, the left-leaning publication said the cheapest Americans could pay at the pump was $2.71.

In April, Donald Trump claimed there were "a couple" of states where gas was "$1.98" per gallon, but he did not clarify which areas he was referring to. However, CNN alleges the statement is untrue.The following day, the Republican politician claimed "three states" were touting "$1.98" per gallon. The Democratic news organization refuted the remark.
During a trip to Florida to visit a makeshift immigration detention center on Tuesday, July 1, Trump alleged five states have gas available for under $2.
"Gasoline just hit $1.99 today in five states – $1.99, isn't that a nice sound?" the commander-in-chief said. "We just hit, in five states, $1.99, $1.98."

According to CNN's report and data collected by American Automobile Association, the lowest state average price for one gallon of regular gas on Tuesday, July 1, was nearly $2.71 in Mississippi. Louisiana is also in the top five states with the cheapest cost for a gallon at $2.79. The national average cost for gas was $3.18 per gallon on that day.GasBuddy, a company that tracks fuel costs across the country, found that there were no stations in the United States of America selling regular gas for below $2.26 per gallon.

While Donald Trump's specific statement may not be true, gas prices are reportedly at its lowest level for a Fourth of July weekend in four years at $3.15 per gallon, GasBuddy claims.The company's founder, Patrick De Haan, told CNN the last time the country's gas prices hit below $2 per gallon was in January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. With AAA is estimating that 61.6 million people will be getting behind the wheel for the Fourth of July weekend, many Americans may be happy to not be spending as much at the pump.
