As Donald Trump spoke to members of the military, he applauded Gretchen Whitmer for her work in Michigan."I want to thank Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer," the Republican said. "You know, I'm not supposed to do that. She's a Democrat. They say, 'Don't do that, don't have her here.' I said, 'No, she's going to be here. … She's done a very good job.'"
"For decades, they've been trying to save this facility … including your governor, who has done a very good job. She came to see me. That's the reason she came to see me, by the way, to save Selfridge. She was very effective," he continued of the base.

Donald Trump then summoned Gretchen Whitmer on stage to say a few words. However, the leftist looked taken off guard to be appearing alongside the right-wing politician."Well, I hadn't planned to speak," Whitmer said. "But on behalf of all the military men and women who serve our country — and serve so honorably on behalf of the state of Michigan — I am really d*** happy we're here to celebrate this recapitalization."

This is the second time Gretchen Whitmer seemed to be embarrassed to be in the presence of Donald Trump. While visiting the White House in mid-April, the attorney hid her face behind a folder to hide her presence in photos."You asked me what was going on in my mind at that moment. It was 'I don't want my picture taken' — that's all it was," Whitmer explained at the Detroit Economic Club on Monday, April 14. "I kind of wish I hadn't put my folder up in front of my face. But whatever. We all have our moments."

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, Gretchen Whitmer pointed out where she agreed with Donald Trump's controversial actions."I understand the motivation behind the tariffs, and I can tell you here's where President Trump and I do agree," she said in a speech ahead of her meeting with the commander-in-chief, according to the New York Post. "We do need to make more stuff in America."

Gretchen Whitmer faced intense backlash for working with Donald Trump. On Thursday, April 10, CNN senior reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere labeled the move a "huge embarrassment" for Democrats."She went for this meeting with the president and he used her as a prop," he claimed.
