Selena Gomez Dazzles in All-White Ahead of 'Jimmy Kimmel!' Appearance After Enjoying a Night Out at 2025 Golden Globes: Photos
by Katherine Tinsley Wonderwall
Selena Gomez was a vision in white while heading to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, January 6, after the 2025 Golden Globes. Gomez, who was nominated for her roles in Emilia Perez and Only Murders in the Building, has showcased her impeccable fashion taste in the past few days.

Upon entering the building, the "Naturally" singer sported a Raisa Vanessa spring 2025 dress and a pair of Aquazzura Love Affair Pumps.
Gomez used simple accessories to avoid distracting from the scooped neckline and textured detailing. Although Gomez didn't have on gaudy jewelry, her massive marquise-cut engagement ring from her fiancé, Benny Blanco, and bridal chic look might give insight into her vision for their upcoming nuptials.

In her interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the 13 Reasons Why producer kept her white theme, as she went with a Saint Laurent satin blazer and a scalloped mini-dress.

While inside The Beverly Hills Hotel, on Sunday, January 5, Gomez's costar Martin Short couldn't ignore the massive rock on her hand.
"I wasn't sure what he was doing," Gomez told Kimmel, as he played a video of Short looking at the trinket. "That's why I look confused."
When Gomez first shared on Instagram that Blanco popped the question, bestie Taylor Swift couldn't contain her excitement. "Yes I will be the flower girl," the pop icon said in the Instagram comments section.
Aside from wedding planning, Kimmel couldn't help but make an NSFW joke about Gomez and Blanco during their time on-air. "It's not traditional and it's not necessarily a practical gift, but I think you and Benny are really going to enjoy it," Kimmel told the Rare Beauty founder. "It's called the Daddy Saddle."
"You can ride around on Benny in a very wholesome way. I don't want you to think that anything is being suggested here that isn't," Kimmel said to a seemingly embarrassed Gomez as he handed her the gift.
"Just try to imagine this hair being a lot more curly. And then you on top of him," he quipped while trying to explain how the contraption works.

The Golden Globes was an important night for film, television, and of course, style! Though Gomez didn't leave the Golden Globes a winner, she was able to end the night with her Prince Charming.

Jeremy Jackson's Ex Loni Willison Spotted Digging Through Dumpsters in L.A.: Photos
by Katherine Tinsley Wonderwall

Baywatch star Jeremy Jackson's ex-wife, Loni Willison, went from being a magazine cover star to living on the streets of Los Angeles, Calif.
On Wednesday, January 1, the former model was spotted digging through garbage and retrieving a Christmas tree.

During the pair's two-year marriage, Willison's mental health declined.
"The woman I was in love with is gone, and whoever she is mentally now is not who I knew," Jackson told Daily Mail.

In 2014, the blonde beauty later accused Jackson of attempting to murder her, leading to union ending with an explosive 9-1-1 call.
"I'm done, I'm done. Don't put me in jail. Babe please, please don't put me in jail," Jackson was caught yelling at his then-wife in a recording.
"He jumped me, he jumped me. He jumped me and broke my TV. He broke my phone," Willison screamed in her saved audio.

In 2018, it was revealed that Willison had been kicked out of her apartment after being seen looking through dumpsters. She was almost unrecognizable, as the glamorous look she was once known for had faded. The blonde beauty later shared that she was evicted after struggling to find work.
"I lost two jobs and everything crumbled. It's been two years, I've been on the streets since," she told Daily Mail in 2018.

While remaining unsheltered, Willison gave an interview to X17 Online, in which her comments seemed incoherent.
"I think because [I pick] up on the electricity, I also pick up on other things, like certain chemicals or batteries, or fuses, like wire, different types of metal," she told the outlet in 2023, as Willison claims she can't live "inside" because she believes she was electrocuted. "So I think my body even filters that kind of stuff."

Willison and Jackson both battled addiction publicly and privately, with the former struggling with crystal meth use. In 2018, friend Kristin Rossetti tried to help Willison turn her life around, but she still wanted to abuse substances.
"I just want to get high," she told Rossetti, according to Daily Mail. "I need to get high. No one is listening to me. I need to get out of here.'"

Rediscovering Himself: Jamie Miller's Emotional Debut Album
by Wonderwall.com Editors Wonderwall

International pop musician Jamie Miller has finally released his debut album, Long Way Home. This 14-track record encapsulates the spirit of personal growth, emotional problems, and rediscovering oneself in the middle of chaos. Miller, known for his deep ballads and heartfelt melodies, utilizes this album to reflect on his self-discovery journey after coming to Los Angeles and dealing with the problems of new relationships and personal identity.
Miller's debut album follows in the footsteps of his previously released single of the same name. The album is a celebration of the precious moments in life, such as taking the long way home to spend extra time with someone you love deeply.
A Personal Journey of Rediscovery
In Long Way Home, Miller reveals his most vulnerable and authentic self. Miller lost sight of who he was after leaving his small-town roots in Wales and experiencing culture shock when he moved to Los Angeles. Surrounded by relationships and events that questioned his identity, he fell into a deep despair.
Instead of burying his anguish, Miller turned to his notebooks for inspiration, creating music that captures his recovery process. "This album represents being real, probably for the first time, about how I lost myself and had to take the long way home to find who I truly am," says Miller.
Honesty Through Music
Miller's desire to be open and honest with his fans is at the album's heart. With Long Way Home, he hopes to break down the myth that artists live perfect, unattainable lives. "We have all these visions that artists are these perfect people, but I'm just a normal guy. I've been through tough times too, and I want people to know that it's possible to live out your dreams while still working through the bad," says Miller. He aims to give listeners hope by reminding them that everyone encounters obstacles, but things can improve.

Themes of Independence and Growth
The highlight single "Better By Myself" exemplifies this idea. The joyful song reflects Miller's newfound clarity as he sees the significance of setting boundaries and leaving harmful situations. "It's about realizing that sometimes, you're better off alone," says Miller. "The love you thought was everything could actually be holding you back." This theme of self-worth and independence runs throughout the album, marking a new chapter in Miller's musical career.
Inspiring Hope Through Music
One of the most moving features of Long Way Home is Miller's ability to translate his personal troubles into approachable, evocative music. Tracks like "Growing Out of You" and "Untie the Knot" explore the complexity of growing out of relationships and the anguish of letting go, which will resonate with listeners in similar situations. By drawing on his personal experiences, Miller creates intimate and universal songs.
Long Way Home reflects Miller's development, healing, and sincerity journey. By revealing his despair experiences and journey to self-discovery, Miller conveys a message of hope and empowerment. His music encourages listeners to appreciate their travels, reminding them that their goals are achievable no matter where they come from.

Reunited and it feels so good! On May 9, Victoria Beckham and her son, Cruz Beckham, both shared a new clip of the impromptu Spice Girls reunion that went down at Posh's 50th birthday party in April 2024. In the video, the '90s-era girl-group — Victoria, along with Mel B (Melanie Brown), Mel C (Melanie Chisholm), Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton — team up on the mic to sing and giggle their way through their 1996 hit "Mama." The cute clip also shows Cruz strumming along to his real-life mama's song on guitar before Mel B cracks everyone up by asking if they're in tune.
In honor of their mini-reunion, join us for a stroll down Spice Girls memory lane, starting with this shot of the then-newly minted pop stars we originally knew as Posh, Scary, Sporty, Ginger and Baby Spice. It was taken on June 15, 1995, just one year after they formed in London and one year before they released "Mama."

May marked a major month for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Their son, Prince Archie, turned 5.
Harry's beloved Invictus Games — the competitive sporting event for wounded, ill and injured soldiers and veterans he founded — celebrated its 10th anniversary, which the royal marked with a service of Thanksgiving in London.
And the pair — who will mark their sixth wedding anniversary later in the month — embarked on their first international tour since stepping down as senior royals and moving from Britain to America in 2020.
Harry Duchess Meghan kicked off a visit to Nigeria on May 10, 2024. They were invited to visit the African nation by Nigeria's Chief of Defense Staff — the country's highest ranking military official. Nigeria means a lot to Meghan, who in 2022 shared on her "Archetypes" podcast that a genealogy test had revealed she's 43% Nigerian.
Join us as we take a look at some of the best photos from the first day of their trip…

Back in January after an image of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrating his team's AFC Championship win in the locker room minus his shirt went viral — the pic was taken from The CW's "Inside the NFL" footage — the 28-year-old NFL star reacted in a post on X.
"Yoooo why they have to do me like that!?!?!?" he wrote, adding three laughing emojis and the hashtag "#DadBodSzn." He then quoted his own post on the app and added, "Like, I got kids!!!"
The "Inside the NFL" account replied, writing, "Elite in our book," and ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller quipped, "You and Jason Kelce doing more for dad bods than anyone in history" — a reference to the now-retired Philadelphia Eagles center's antics at the Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills game during the playoffs — and further added that Patrick and Jason were "doing the lord's work."

So join us as we rank our way through the best new TV shows you'll want to add to your queue, pronto.
Let's take a look…

No. 10: 'Feud: Capote vs. the Swans'
FX's gloriously campy drama "Feud: Capote vs. the Swans" looks back on the rift and ultimate destruction of writer Truman Capote's relationships with a group of New York City socialite-pals he nicknamed his "swans" in the '60s. The breakdown infamously began after he started publishing thinly veiled fiction pieces based on their real-life private escapades. It escalated with his equally infamous 1966 "Black and White Ball."
Starring Tom Hollander as Capote, the lavishly costumed series features a stellar cast of increasingly angry, hurt — and in some cases, vengeful — swans: Naomi Watts as Babe Paley, Diane Lane as Slim Keith, Chloë Sevigny as C. Z. Guest, Calista Flockhart as Lee Radziwill, Demi Moore as Ann Woodward and Molly Ringwald as Joanne Carson. Jessica Lange plays a ghostly would-be swan in the form of Capote's late mother.
Equal parts trashy fun and truly sad, the series earned a 76% critics rating on our favorite binge-worthiness barometer, RottenTomatoes.com.

No. 9: 'Masters of the Air'
The gorgeous World War II drama "Masters of the Air," another new series based on a book, follows the airmen of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States Air Forces as they risk their lives to fight for their country and each other. The Apple TV+ series' rising-star cast includes Austin Butler, fresh off his "Elvis" accolades, along with Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle, Rafferty Law, Ncuti Gatwa, Nate Mann and more.
The show's inspiration comes from Donald L. Miller's acclaimed 2007 book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," but the producers behind "Masters of the Air" know their stuff, too. That would be Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, who also produced the award-winning series, "Band of Brothers." Rotten Tomatoes' critics rewarded their efforts with a 86% rating.

No. 8: 'The Sympathizer'
If onscreen transformations are your thing, look no further than HBO's satirical spy thriller, "The Sympathizer," which sees Robert Downey Jr. transform into four different characters — all in one scene. If you prefer great storytelling to costume and makeup drama, however, this limited series could still float your boat, since it's based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.
HBO describes "The Sympathizer" as "an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren't over."
Directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Hoa Xuande, Scott Ly, Fred Nguyen Khan and Downey (x 4), the critics round-up from Rotten Tomatoes gives "The Sympathizer" a commendable 87%.

No. 7: 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith,' season 1
More spies! Maya Erskine and Donald Glover take over for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as the titular "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in this reimagining of the 2005 blockbuster that was, shall we say, not worth busting a block over. The 2024 Amazon Prime series, by contrast, "starts over from scratch with a completely new set-up … as if the original doesn't exist," writes the Irish Independent's Pat Stacey, who goes on to praise the show as "clever, funny and exciting." Stacey's not alone. Other reviewers have gushed about Erskine and Glover's chemistry, while the New Yorker's Inkoo Kang says the rebooted characters — now "spies-for-hire posing as husband and wife" rather than assassins — "embody their generation's emotional and economic malaise."
Despite Kang's claims of more depth than meets the eye, the show's 90% Rotten Tomatoes critics rating is countered by a wildly lower audience score of 66% (womp womp), so we're knocking it down a rung or two in our list. Moving on…
No. 6: 'Expats'
"Expats," Amazon Prime's sprawling, six-part series about three women whose lives collide in Hong Kong, explores grief, loneliness and geographic displacement through the lens of how "a single encounter sets off a chain of life-altering events that leaves everyone navigating the intricate balance between blame and accountability." It sounds intense, and that's because it is, according to just about everyone who's sounded off on the show. That said, the storyline — it's based on Janice YK Lee's bestselling novel "Expatriates" — and acting are reportedly stellar.
"Expats" stars Sarayu Blue as a housewife struggling with fertility and career questions, Ji-young Yoo as a recent college grad looking for a change, and Nicole Kidman, seen here with her co-star Brian Tee, as a newly minted Hong Kong resident who's recently relocated with her family.
It snagged an 84% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though as one RogerEbert.com review warns, it's "powerful but harrowing watch."
No. 5: 'One Day'
In other love-hate reviews … The Guardian calls it "a flawless romcom you'll fall for, hard," and Slate.com's reviewer says "it's excruciating to watch, I loved it." The "it" in question? Netflix's "One Day," a decades-spanning love story set during — uh-huh, one day — that racked up a rare 91% critics rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. (It was also reportedly the most-watched series worldwide in its first week on Netflix in February.)
Set in 1988 and starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the couple-to-be pictured here, the series focuses on Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley. According to the show's synopsis, they "have only just met" each other when we meet them, but there's clearly a shared horizon in their future. Per Netflix, "They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another."
The source material here is both David Nicholls' original novel, "One Day," and to a lesser extent the 2011 film adaptation, but it's worth noting the full-length movie was nowhere near this well-received.
No. 4: 'Mary & George'
In "Mary & George," Julianne Moore is the Countess of Buckingham, who schemes her way into a better life by using her easy-on-the-eyes son, George (Nicholas Galitzine) as lover-bait to lure the king's favor in the early 1600s. It's yet another new series based on a book — in this case, Benjamin Woolley's "The King's Assassin," a historical account of King James VI and I's affair with George Villiers — and it's every bit as fun, quirky and gorgeous as its stars. Is it brilliant? Nah. But what "Mary & George" lacks in genius plot lines and intricate character development, it more than makes up for in fabulous costumes, dark humor and pretty scenes. Rotten Tomatoes' critics give the show a strong 95% rating.
No. 3: 'Fallout,' season 1
If "One Day" is the romance series you didn't know you needed, then "Fallout" just may be the post-apocalypse version of the same. Set 219 years after the world as we know has been nuked into obliteration, the story follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), a would-be newlywed who's spent her life in one of the underground vaults where humans are now able to live, if not thrive. Lucy's wedding day goes very, very wrong, however, and she finds herself trying to eke out an existence in a world she didn't know was out there — or, as Prime puts it, "the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there's almost nothing left to have." We quickly learn Lucy is among the "gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters" who've been "forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them."
No need to have any gamer tendencies for this one — just an affection for good writing, great performances and very creepy soundtracks. It's a wild ride, for sure, and an eye-popping 93% of Rotten Tomatoes' critics agree.
No. 2: 'Baby Reindeer'
Despite its cute title, "Baby Reindeer" is not for the emotionally faint of heart, but it is worth the investment. The Netflix series was reportedly inspired by the true, autobiographical story behind writer and actor Richard Gadd's 2019 Edinburgh Fringe play of the same name, which he penned about his "warped relationship with his female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deep, dark buried trauma," according to the streamer.
Critics have found the show so compelling it scored 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. "'Baby Reindeer' transcends its trauma drama to succeed as art," one Globe & Mail reviewer writes, "because it does what good art does: It holds up a mirror to human experience and makes us feel less alone."
No. 1: 'Shogun'
Without a doubt, the latest screen iteration of James Clavell's epic novel "Shōgun" — a tale of war, honor, love and culture in Japan circa 1600 — is among the most visually stunning dramas you can find on TV. FX's version also updates some of the problematic elements that prevented the 1980 movie from aging all that well, although critics have pointed out there's only so much you can tweak without changing the story.
Set "at the dawn of a century-defining civil war," Hulu's synopsis tells us, "Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village." Things get dramatic, dark and complicated from there — in a mostly good way. Rotten Tomatoes gives this one 99%, with critics praising the incredible performances and "poetic storytelling."
"The breakout star, though," writes The Wrap's Brandon Yu, "is Anna Sawai as Mariko, Blackthorne's translator and a sort of right-hand to Toranaga, a meaty and sometimes unwieldy role that Sawai embodies with grace."

Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi has quietly and abruptly retired from the sport to reportedly pursue a career as a fashion model. The viral sports star last played a match in March, which saw her losing to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open. Since then, the Women's Tennis Association "cannot get a hold of her," according to one report.
Italian media outlet Corriere Della Sera said Camila pulled out of tennis' anti-doping program, further cementing her retired status.
Camila, 32, reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2018 and won four WTA tournaments, but she is more known to some for her Instagram feed, in which she often poses in lingerie, bikinis and fashionable attire.

Join us as we look back at some of the best movies based on books…
Anne Hathaway plays an art gallery owner and Nicholas Galitzine plays a British pop star in the 2024 Prime Video movie "The Idea of You," which is based on actress-author Robinne Lee's juicy 2017 book of the same name. Michael Showalter directed the movie from a screenplay co-written with Jennifer Westfeldt.
The 2024 rom-com centers on Solène, a 40-year-old single mom who unexpectedly falls for 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon — the hottest boy band on the planet — after he pursues her following a chance meeting at the Coachella music festival. Things get complicated as they navigate his fame, her life with a teenage daughter and the societal pressures of an older woman dating a younger man.

The hit 2004 romantic drama "The Notebook" is based on a 1996 Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. Like the book, the film centers around young lovers Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) who reconnect years after their differences first tore them apart. The movie may not have been a hit with critics — and it certainly didn't win any Oscars — but it performed well at the box office and is now widely considered to be one of the greatest love stories told on film.

Frank Darabont's lauded 1994 prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption" is based on Stephen King's 1982 novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." Tim Robbins starred as banker Andy Dufresne — falsely imprisoned for the murders of his wife and her lover — who befriends a group of fellow inmates including Morgan Freeman's Red while serving two consecutive life sentences and experiencing the brutality of life behind bars during the late 1940s. The film scored seven Oscar nominations including best picture, best adapted screenplay and best lead actor for Morgan.
_
The 2023 Prime Video movie "Red, White & Royal Blue" is based on the bestselling 2019 novel of the same name by author Casey McQuiston
It follows American law school student Alex Claremont-Diaz (played by Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the first female president of the United States (played by Uma Thurman), and Britain's Prince Henry (played by Nicholas Galitzine), a handsome, charismatic young royal with whom the first son has had a social feud for years.
After a disastrous incident unfolds between the two men during a royal wedding attended by global leaders, they're forced by their powerful families and handlers to form a truce that turns into a friendship and, eventually, far more.
In May 2024, Amazon MGM Studios announced that a sequel — set to again star Nicholas and Taylor — was in the works.
_
Arguably the greatest film of all time is based on a book: The 1972 epic "The Godfather" — which was adapted from Mario Puzo's bestselling 1969 novel of the same name — centers around a fictional New York City-based crime family led by Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and chronicles the transformation of his son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), from reluctant outsider to ruthless mafia boss. "The Godfather" won three Oscars — best picture, best adapted screenplay and best lead actor for Marlon — and scored eight more Academy Award nominations including best director and best supporting actor for Al and co-stars Robert Duvall and James Caan.
_
One of the most successful film franchises of all time is based on one of the best-selling book series of all time: The first "Harry Potter" film, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," debuted in 2001. It went on to spawn seven sequels and the "Fantastic Beasts" prequel trilogy, which kicked off in 2016. The 11-film series — which scored a number of Oscar nominations over the years — has banked nearly $10 billion at the global box office over the years.
_
The 2004 teen comedy "Mean Girls" isn't based on a novel, but it was inspired by a book: Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 self-help book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," which was written for the parents of teenage girls.
Tina Fey mined the text for comedy gold and turned the film's young star, Lindsay Lohan, into a household name. The film — in which Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert also starred — inspired a 2017 Broadway musical of the same name that was turned into a lauded 2024 musical film.
_
The hit 2001 rom-com "Bridget Jones's Diary" is based on a 1996 novel of the same name by Helen Fielding — who co-wrote the screenplay — inspired by Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." The movie was a huge hit with critics and at the box office — Renee Zellweger scored an Oscar nomination for best lead actress for her work alongside Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. She returned for two sequels: 2004's "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" and 2016's "Bridget Jones's Baby."
A third sequel is reportedly set to start filming in 2024.
_
The 2024 romantic drama "Float" is based on Kate Marchant's wildly popular Wattpad novel of the same name.
The film centers around a young woman named Waverly (Andrea Bang) who blows off her summer med school prep courses after the handsome boy next door (Robbie Amell) saves her life when she nearly drowns while visiting her aunt over the summer. Sparks fly as he teaches her how to swim — and as she begins to learn what she really wants out of life.

The 2006 dramedy "The Devil Wears Prada" is based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name. It centers around aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and her boss-from-hell Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), who's inspired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The film was a huge hit with critics and at the box office and went on to score two Oscar nominations: best costume design, naturally, and best lead actress for Meryl.
_
Christian Bale absolutely slayed as serial killer Patrick Bateman in the 2000 satirical horror film "American Psycho," which is based on Bret Easton Ellis's disturbing 1991 novel of the same name. Critics may not have loved the drama, but that didn't stop it from developing a cult following over the years.
_
Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" was the must-read book of 2012 — and the David Fincher-directed adaptation was the must-watch film of 2014. Ben Affleck starred in the psychological thriller as an aloof teacher who becomes the prime suspect when his wife (Rosamund Pike, who scored an Oscar nomination for her work in the film) suddenly goes missing. "Gone Girl" was a huge hit with critics and at the box office.
_
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum has been adapted countless times, but it's the 1939 musical version — titled "The Wizard of Oz" and starring a young Judy Garland — that won our hearts. Widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, the musical won the Oscars for best score and best original song for "Over the Rainbow." It scored three more Academy Award nominations including best picture, which it lost to "Gone with the Wind."
_
"The Hunger Games" had something for everyone when it hit theaters in 2012: romance, action, political intrigue and more. Perhaps that's why the original four-film franchise — which is based on Suzanne Collins' trilogy of dystopian YA novels — was so incredibly successful. The Jennifer Lawrence-led action flicks grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide, making "The Hunger Games" one of the top-grossing film franchises of all time.
In 2020, Suzanne dropped the prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," which was adapted into a hit 2023 film similarly titled "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes."
_
After Alice Walker's epic 1982 novel "The Color Purple" won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, it inspired a 1985 Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation that racked up 11 Oscar nominations including best picture, best adapted screenplay, best actress for Whoopi Goldberg and best supporting actress for both Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey.
The novel went on to inspire a 2004 Broadway musical of the same name that in turn inspired a 2023 musical film. Danielle Brooks, who starred in the 2015 Broadway revival, scored an Oscar nomination for her work in the 2023 film.
_
Leonardo DiCaprio went to great lengths to shoot 2015's "The Revenant," which is based on Michael Punke's 2002 novel of the same name. All his hard work paid off: He won the Oscar for best actor in 2016. Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki also took home Oscars for their work on the film, which scored a total of 12 Academy Award nominations including best picture.
_
Chocolate rivers, Everlasting Gobstoppers, Fizzy Lifting Drinks — our greatest childhood dreams came alive with the delicious 1971 big-screen adaptation of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which was renamed "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." (Roald would disagree with this addition to the list — he reportedly hated the movie, which starred the late, great Gene Wilder.) Sadly, the 2005 remake starring Johnny Depp was not nearly as sweet.
_
The 2011 period drama "The Help" is based on Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel of the same name. It was a big hit with critics and at the box office, though it only won a single Oscar: best supporting actress for Octavia Spencer, who starred as a put-upon housekeeper during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi. "The Help" earned three more Academy Award nominations: best picture, best lead actress for Viola Davis and best supporting actress for Jessica Chastain. (Emma Stone also starred in the film as an aspiring writer who interviews the maids about the systematic racism they've faced over the years.)
_
Emma Donoghue, who wrote the 2010 novel "Room," also wrote the screenplay for the 2015 adaptation starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay as a mother and son who escape the shed where she was held captive for years — and where he was born — so that he can finally experience life in the outside world. Brie won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, a BAFTA Award, a Critics Choice Award, an Independent Spirit Award and more for her work in the drama, which scored three more Academy Award nominations: best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay.
_
The 2015 adaptation of Colm Tóibín's 2009 novel "Brooklyn" scored three Academy Award nominations: best picture, best adapted screenplay and best lead actress for Saoirse Ronan, who starred as an Irish immigrant torn between her two homes and two loves.
_
Emily Blunt starred as a lonely alcoholic who witnesses a crime but begins to doubt what she really saw in the 2016 adaptation of Paula Hawkins' novel "The Girl on the Train." While the psychological thriller failed to impress critics, it was a huge hit at the box office, raking in more than $173 million at the global box office. Emily also scored BAFTA and SAG Award nominations for her work in the film.
_
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander met and fell in love while co-starring as a married couple in the 2016 adaptation of M.L. Stedman's New York Times bestselling novel "The Light Between Oceans." The drama kicks off when the couple, who live on an island off the coast of Australia, rescue and informally adopt a baby who washes ashore. Years later, they're forced to confront the consequences of their actions. The film performed well with critics, although it ultimately failed to make much impact at the box office.
_
"Where the Crawdads Sing" — a 2022 adaptation of the 2018 Delia Owens novel of the same name, which topped The New York Times Best Seller list — may have tanked with critics, but that didn't stop fans of the book from showing up in droves to see Kya's epic love story with her childhood sweetheart play out on the big screen. Daisy Edgar-Jones starred as "the Marsh Girl" — an outsider who becomes the primary suspect in the murder of a former suitor — in the Reese Witherspoon-produced drama.
_
The 2007 romantic tragedy "Atonement" — which is based on Ian McEwan's 2001 novel of the same name — centers around young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), who are torn apart on the brink of WWII by a lie told by Cecilia's jealous younger sister (Saoirse Ronan). The period drama performed well with critics and at the box office and went on to score seven Oscar nominations including best picture, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress for Saoirse.

Three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Ryan Gosling got his big break in 1993 on "The All New Mickey Mouse Club" (alongside up-and-coming superstars like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) and within a decade had risen through the ranks to become one of the biggest Hollywood heartthrobs — and, let's be honest, our favorite internet meme.
To celebrate the release of his new action movie "The Fall Guy" co-starring Emily Blunt — which opened in theaters to fantastic reviews on May 3 — join us as we rank 25 of Ryan's big-screen roles from good to totally great.
Keep reading to see where your favorite Ryan role landed on our list…

No. 25: Jared Vennett in "The Big Short"
Here's what we do know about Ryan Gosling's character, Jared Vennett, in the 2015 biographical dramedy "The Big Short": He's a smart Deutsche Bank salesman and he's the narrator of the film that's about, um, well, something to do with the collapse of the housing market.
The movie, which sought to explain subprime lending and how a few Wall Street billionaires made big money off the housing market's inevitable crash, was two hours and 10 minutes of investment jargon we couldn't quite understand (and we weren't alone in our misery).
But even if we weren't sure what was happening, we didn't mind watching Ryan and his equally talented co-stars (Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Steve Carell) do their thing (whatever that thing actually was).
Proof that Ryan slayed the part came when he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance the following year.
No. 24: Alan Bosley in "Remember the Titans"
The 2000 historical biography "Remember the Titans" was a phenomenal movie (it really was) and Ryan Gosling's character, Alan Bosley (seen here in the center), was one of the bright spots of the film. Happy-go-lucky Alan was sweet, a little goofy (remember that dorm room dance?) and one of the few football players who didn't have a problem playing alongside his African-American teammates (hashtag woke). While Ryan wasn't yet a major star (or even the star of this film), we knew he was something special to behold.
No. 23: Julian in "Only God Forgives"
Perhaps the one saving grace of "Only God Forgives" is Ryan Gosling's character, Julian. In the painfully slow-paced film, Julian is a drug trafficker who's called upon by his mother (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) to take the life of the man who killed his brother (spoiler alert: His brother was an evil, woman-beating murderer who deserved to die). The movie was widely panned by critics but there is something exciting about watching good-guy Ryan transform into a very, very bad man on screen.
No. 22: Leland in "The United States of Leland"
It's hard to believe there's only one year between the release of "The United States of Leland" and "The Notebook" because Ryan Gosling looks about 10 years younger in the first film as Leland — a young man sent to a juvenile detention center for stabbing an autistic boy to death. What's fascinating about 15-year-old Leland is that even though he committed an unthinkable crime, there's something magnetic about him that makes us want him to succeed against all odds. For us, it's proof that Ryan can redeem even the worst of characters.
No. 21: BV in "Song to Song"
Although "Song to Song" felt like a dream (and sometimes a nightmare), Ryan Gosling's character, BV — a struggling songwriter in love with a woman named Faye (played by Rooney Mara) — was the cool drink of water we needed to wash down the excess sound (lots of concerts in this film) and imagery overload. While the movie itself wasn't our favorite, we believed BV as he searched for meaning in a harsh, loud and volatile world.
No. 20: David Marks in "All Good Things"
"All Good Things" is a haunting tale of an unsolved murder. The story, which is based on a real-life case, features Ryan Gosling as young real estate heir David Marks, who falls in love with a working-class girl named Katie (played by Kirsten Dunst). Their idyllic love life is shattered when Katie goes missing and all fingers point to David. As is true for many of Ryan's movies, his transformation from the young man in love to a potential murderer is hauntingly believable.
No. 19: Roy Chutney in "The Slaughter Rule"
In the 2002 indie film "The Slaughter Rule," Ryan Gosling played Roy Chutney, a teenager in despair who loses his father (possibly to suicide) and then his place on his beloved high school football team. The reason we loved Ryan as Roy was due to his emotional depth and resilience, even when life dealt him a terrible hand. We also enjoyed the complexities of his budding friendship with an older man named Gideon (played by David Morse), who steps in as the father figure Roy so desperately needed.
No. 18: Henry Letham in "Stay"
The 2005 psychological thriller "Stay" left us all questioning our reality. Ryan Gosling had us in the palm of his edgy, unstable hand as Henry, a suicidal (and potentially psychic) young man on a mission to end his life on his 21st birthday the same way his favorite painter did. His psychologist, Dr. Sam Foster (played by Ewan McGregor), tries to do everything he can to stop Henry. The only problem is he's not able to tell the difference between what's real, what's not, who's alive and who's already dead.
No. 17: Richard Haywood in "Murder By Numbers"
Okay, we'll just admit it now: We love it when Ryan Gosling plays the villain. In the 2002 crime thriller "Murder By Numbers," Ryan plays a preppy, popular and very rich high schooler named Richard Haywood. Richard isn't content having it all, so he teams up with the class nerd to plot what they call the "perfect murder." The pair go through with their horrific plan, setting up an innocent man in the process, all to watch what happens when detectives (like Sandra Bullock's character) scramble to solve the case.
No. 16: Dean in "Blue Valentine"
Ryan Gosling's character in "Blue Valentine," Dean, has a lot working against him. He's a slacker, a high school dropout and has no real ambition in life. However, his love for his wife, Cindy (played by Michelle Williams), is his one redeeming quality and he truly loves her, through all their struggles and challenges, even when he's walking away from the life they once shared. Ryan earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
No. 15: The driver in "Drive"
2017 gave us "Baby Driver," but six years earlier, we had the darker Ryan Gosling version with the movie "Drive." In the film, Ryan plays Driver, a young man who stunt drives for films while also selling his talent for fast, evasive driving to criminals. Like most characters Ryan plays, Driver has a good heart behind his bad behavior, which is in full force when he falls in love with a young single mom (played by Carey Mulligan).
No. 14: Stephen Meyers in "The Ides of March"
In the 2011 political drama "The Ides of March," Ryan Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, the press secretary for the hopeful Democratic presidential candidate (played by George Clooney) — a man who Stephen believes is above dirty political maneuvering. Stephen is pulled into a scandal after he makes a critical mistake and later discovers the man he's stood proudly behind to help become the next U.S. president isn't who he claimed to be. The film also co-stars Marisa Tomei (seen here). Ryan earned Golden Globe and Critics' Choice nominations for his performance.
No. 13: Holland March in "The Nice Guys"
Ryan Gosling's character Holland March in the 2016 crime comedy "The Nice Guys" is one of the most lovable (and, at times, laughable) roles he's ever played. Holland is a private investigator who's also an alcoholic and a single dad to a cheeky preteen who behaves a lot more like his mom than his daughter. He's forced to pair up with another private eye, a more rough and tumble kind of guy (played by Russell Crowe), to help track down a young woman who's gone missing. In the process, the two incur the wrath of the mob and more than a few dead bodies (much to Holland's hilarious dismay). Ryan earned a Critics' Choice Award nomination for his performance.
No. 12: Danny Balint in "The Believer"
In the 2001 drama "The Believer," Ryan Gosling plays a man named Danny Balint — a Jewish New York college student who struggles conforming to his faith (which eventually leads him to turn against his religion and, unbelievably, join the KKK). The movie is loosely based on the true story of Dan Burros, who was discovered to be Jewish by clansmen shortly before he took his own life. The shocking storyline showcased Ryan's talent for portraying dramatic, complex characters long before he was a household name.
No. 11: Jacob in "Crazy, Stupid, Love"
We either wanted to be Ryan Gosling's character Jacob in the 2011 dramatic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" or we wanted to date him (and at times, oddly, it felt like both). Jacob was the intensely confident mentor to Steve Carell's character, Cal — a man in the midst of a divorce who had no idea how to form a romantic connection with women. As Jacob taught Cal how to make the ladies swoon, he also found his own (secretive) love story with Cal's daughter, Hannah (played by Emma Stone).
No. 10: Willy Beachum in "Fracture"
In the 2007 crime thriller "Fracture," Ryan Gosling (seen here with co-star Rosamund Pike) played a hotshot prosecutor named Willy Beachum whose final case against a confessed murderer (played by Anthony Hopkins) might just be his undoing. Willy's flawless record takes a hit when he's outwitted by the man he's trying to convict, but even when the case is closed, he won't sleep until he's figured out how a man could kill his wife, admit it and walk free. As expected, Ryan delivered a multifaceted character who wasn't just a show-off in the courtroom, but a passionate vigilante for truth.
No. 9: Sgt. Jerry Wooters in "Gangster Squad"
In 2013's "Gangster Squad," Ryan Gosling played the squeaky-voiced Sgt. Jerry Wooters, a man who joins a secretive police task force (led by Josh Brolin's character, Sgt. John O'Mara), which was formed to take out the city's most violent mob boss, Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn). What Jerry lacks in vocal chords he makes up for in gun (and fore) play, shooting down some of the most notorious gangsters in L.A. while seducing Grace Faraday (played by Emma Stone) — a woman with intimate ties to the crime boss. Ryan shines in the movie as a (basically) good guy who isn't afraid to play dirty — and we loved every minute of it.
No. 8: Noah in "The Notebook"
Forgive us for not making Ryan Gosling's swoon-worthy character Noah from "The Notebook" our No. 1 choice — but we promise, however hard it is to believe, Ryan's played even more amazing roles than this. For now, we'll wax poetic about the beautiful love story between Noah and Allie (played by Rachel McAdams) and how life tried to tear them apart, but their hearts couldn't beat without one another. Sappy and saccharine sweet? Of course. Will we watch this movie 100 more times and still get teary-eyed? Absolutely. Fun fact: Not only was this the movie that launched Ryan's amazing mainstream career in Hollywood, but it was also responsible for introducing him to Rachel, who he reportedly "couldn't stand" at first but later fell in love with and dated for three long years.
No. 7: K in "Blade Runner 2049"
Next up? Ryan Gosling's action flick "Blade Runner 2049, where he plays K — a blade runner (that's the cool word for "assassin") who uncovers a secret so powerful, it could be the undoing of society as he knows it. K is forced to track down Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford, from the original "Blade Runner" movie in 1982), who's been missing for 30 years. A major bonus to this sci-fi adventure is all the kick-a– fighting scenes that let Ryan (ahem, K) be the total hero of the future.
No. 6: Colt Seavers in "The Fall Guy"
As stuntman extraordinaire Colt Seavers in 2024's "The Fall Guy," Ryan Gosling delivered action, humor, emotion (that scene of him crying while listening to Taylor Swift's "All Too Well" was a nice touch) and more. He was outrageously fun to watch as he took on bad guys, dazzled the audience with insanely dangerous stunts and wooed his director, Jody (played by Emily Blunt). This film was a blast to watch and really, it's all because of his epic performance.
No. 5: Ken in "Barbie"
Though it seems like the most fun role he's ever played, Ryan Gosling claims playing the iconic toy doll Ken in 2023's "Barbie" wasn't exactly a cushy walk in Barbie's dream house. "It's the hardest role I've ever had to play," the actor told Variety, adding, "I wanted to make sure if I was going to do it — I was like, 'I can't mess this up. I can't be the guy that messed up the Barbie movie.'" His hard work playing Barbie's love interest paid off: Ryan earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. And his performance of "I'm Just Ken" in the movie (and at the 2024 Oscars) will go down in Hollywood history as one of the most entertaining cinematic musical moments ever.
No. 4: Luke in "The Place Beyond the Pines"
In the 2012 crime drama "A Place Beyond the Pines," Ryan Gosling played Luke, a motorcycle stuntman who lives life in the fast lane. Everything changes when he finds out he's fathered a newborn baby. Committed to providing for the mother and his child, Luke uses his talent for speed in a string of bank robberies. While he's made good on his promise to bring home cash, a persistent detective is determined to track him down and make him face justice. We love the intensity of this film almost as much as we love the fact that Ryan met his future girlfriend and real-life baby mama, Eva Mendes, while making the movie. (Plus, not gonna lie, Ryan is super-sexy covered in tattoos.)
No. 3: Dan Dunne in "Half Nelson"
Ryan Gosling earned his first Oscar nomination for his performance in the 2006 drama "Half Nelson" as Dan Dunne — an eighth-grade history teacher and girls basketball coach who's awakened his students' desire to learn (very "Dangerous Minds" stuff here) but at the same time, is battling with his own demons (namely, a crack addiction). His life is a balancing act that threatens to come unhinged when one of his students catches him smoking crack in the girls' locker room. From that moment, a strange but uplifting friendship emerges between the teacher and 13-year-old girl that gives them both hope for their otherwise bleak futures. Ryan was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance.
No. 2: Sebastian in "La La Land"
Ryan Gosling delivered his second Academy Award-nominated performance in the 2016 musical dramedy "La La Land" (which paired him once again with the lovely Emma Stone). In the film, Ryan plays Sebastian, a struggling jazz pianist who dreams of opening his own nightclub. His world is transformed into something magical when he meets (and keeps bumping into) a beautiful, struggling actress named Mia (played by Emma). Theirs is a story of love, big dreams and perhaps even more so, of loss. Ryan won his first Golden Globe Award for this performance.
No. 1: Lars Lindstrom in "Lars and the Real Girl"
Had Ryan Gosling never starred as socially awkward Lars Lindstrom in the 2007 romantic dramedy "Lars and the Real Girl," well, we're not sure our lives would be as complete. The movie is about a painfully shy young man who is beloved by his family and community but struggles to make meaningful romantic connections. After being pressured for years to talk to girls, Lars shows up at his brother's house one day with a guest. The only problem? She's a love doll he ordered off the internet and he seems to believe she's a real person. Afraid that Lars is going crazy, his brother seeks the advice of a doctor who tells him to "play along" and soon enough, the entire town is in on the charade. Lars is so lovable and quirky but at the same time so deeply flawed and hurting that we were shocked this wasn't the role that won Ryan his first Oscar. Say what you will about his performances in "La La Land" and "Half Nelson," but we're dead serious that Lars was the the character Ryan was born to play, which is why this is our No. 1 pick.

From an iconic rom-com to a biopic that earned her an Academy Award, Renee Zellweger has starred in some truly great movies over the decades. Though it's hard to pick favorites, we're taking a stab at ranking her best work.
Read on to see where your favorite Zellweger performance lands on our list…
MORE: Follow Wonderwall on MSN for more fun celebrity & entertainment photo galleries and content
15. Debbie in "Same Kind of Different as Me"
Renee Zellweger took a break from Hollywood for six years and has only put out a few films since her return. Her character in one of those takes is in the last spot on the list — Debbie, a woman with a cheating husband, from the 2017 drama "Same Kind of Different as Me." Debbie's spouse makes amends by volunteering at a local homeless shelter, which results in them helping a troubled man. Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou also starred in the film, which scored a 40% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but was deemed 84% fresh by audiences.

14. Jenny in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre – The Next Generation"
Next on the list? Her first starring role! Renee Zellweger's first big part came in 1995's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation," the fourth installment in the iconic horror franchise. She played Jenny, one of four teens who gets in an accident after prom only to find themselves terrorized by Leatherface. Matthew McConaughey also starred in the flick, which was re-cut and re-released two years later after Renee and Matthew became massive stars. Despite the re-release, the film was panned by critics and didn't do well at the box office.

13. Anne in "The Bachelor"
Though the film wasn't a massive success, we'd be remiss if we didn't include Renee Zellweger's character in 1999's "The Bachelor" — not to be confused with the ABC dating show that debuted a few years later. Renee played Anne, the girlfriend of Chris O'Donnell's Jimmie, who must marry in order to receive a massive inheritance. Since Anne has left the country and is unsure of his willingness to wed, Jimmie tracks down old girlfriends (played by stars like Brooke Shields and Mariah Carey) only to realize it's Anne he truly loves. Even though the film only earned $37 million at the box office, the sweet love story ensured Renee's Anne a spot on this list.
12. Gina in "Empire Records"
One of Renee Zellweger's earliest roles came in 1995 in "Empire Records." She played Gina in the film about record shop employees trying to save their store from being sold to a bigger chain. The movie was a box office failure and received dismal reviews despite later gaining somewhat of a cult following. Despite its initial poor reception, there was one thing critics of the film were united on — Renee was great in this one!
11. Barbara in "Down with Love"
"Down with Love" might have been a box office flop, but Renee Zellweger's performance as Barbara still stands out. The 2003 romantic comedy saw Renee paired with Ewan McGregor in a flick about the early '60s right before the sexual revolution. Barbara stands as a female empowerment proponent of the time, advocating to free women from the concept of love with her new book "Down with Love." While promoting the book, she meets Ewan's Catcher, an infamous lady's man, and the two inevitably fall for each other against all odds.
10. Irene in "Me, Myself and Irene"
Renee Zellweger truly flexed her comedy muscles opposite Jim Carrey in 2000's "Me, Myself & Irene." The Farrelly brothers directed the dark comedy, which saw Renee play criminal Irene, who allegedly committed a hit-and-run and ended up getting Jim's cop character involved in her hijinx. Though it wasn't a hit with critics, audiences enjoyed this odd yet funny flick.
9. Beatrix Potter in "Miss Potter"
Our No. 8 pick comes from a biopic: Renee Zellweger took on the role of children's book author and illustrator Beatrix Potter in 2006's "Miss Potter." The film chronicled her life — interspersed with animated sequences with some of her most iconic characters, like Peter Rabbit. Playing the legendary author earned Renee a Golden Globe nomination, and the biopic was largely loved by critics. Fun fact: "Bohemian Rhapsody" star Lucy Boynton played the younger version of Beatrix in the film!
8. Claire in "White Oleander"
"White Oleander" was a 2002 drama in which Renee Zellweger starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Robin Wright. Renee played Claire, an actress who becomes a foster mother to a troubled teen and has her own demons brought to light in the process, resulting in her suicide. The sad film wasn't a huge hit with audiences, but the tragic turn earned Renee a Satellite Award nomination for best supporting actress.
7. Betty in "Nurse Betty"
In 2000, Renee Zellweger won her first Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for her work in "Nurse Betty" opposite Greg Kinnear. The dark comedy saw Renee playing a waitress who witnesses her husband's murder and has a nervous breakdown that leads her to Los Angeles in pursuit of her favorite soap opera actor. Though quirky Betty isn't our favorite Renee character, she's definitely one of the actress's most unique portrayals.
6. Mae in "Cinderella Man"
Renee Zellweger tried her hand at a sports drama with 2005's "Cinderella Man" opposite Russell Crowe and Paul Giamatti. The story centered around a boxer forced to give up his career after breaking his right hand while fighting, with Renee playing his wife, Mae. When the Great Depression drives him back to boxing and he discovers he can fight with his left hand, his wife stands dutifully beside him as he becomes the heavyweight champion of the world. Though Renee didn't pick up any individual nominations for her work in the film, the flick earned three Academy Award noms and was a hit with critics.
5. Ruby in "Cold Mountain"
Next up is the role that earned her an Oscar! Renee Zellweger won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2003 for her performance as Ruby in "Cold Mountain." The dramatic Civil War-centered tale followed a Confederate Army deserter (played by Jude Law) trying to get home to his true love (Nicole Kidman). Ruby was Nicole's character's close friend who helps her run a farm. Renee's superb acting not only earned her the Oscar, but a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA as well.
4. Dorothy in "Jerry Maguire"
"Jerry Maguire" made Renee Zellweger a household name, and it features one of her best performances of all time. The actress starred opposite Tom Cruise in the romantic comedy-drama as single mom Dorothy, a staffer who follows Tom's character as he leaves his big sports management company and starts his own small firm — and ends up falling for him. Renee's character also utters one of the most famous lines in movie history in the film: "You had me at hello."
3. Roxie Hart in "Chicago"
Coming in third on this list is Roxie Hart in "Chicago," a role that earned Renee Zellweger a Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a musical or comedy in 2002 — and for good reason! She sang, she danced and she delivered an incredible turn as the manipulative murderess. Thanks in part to her star power and strong performance, the flick became the highest grossing live-action musical up to that point (the record was later broken in 2008 by "Mamma Mia!").
2. Judy Garland in "Judy"
Renee Zellweger took on the role of a real life legend — Judy Garland — in the 2019 film "Judy." The critically acclaimed biopic chronicaled the last year of the star's life, with Renee embodying the late entertainer flawlessly. Rolling Stone called her work in the film, "the performance of the year," and that review proved true… she went on to win the Academy Award for best actress that year (the second Oscar of her career!).
1. Bridget in "Bridget Jones's Diary"
Bridget, whom audiences first met in 2001's "Bridget Jones's Diary," earns the top spot on our list. Renee Zellweger played the lovable thirty-something character who humorously chronicles her unsuccessful love life and close friendships with London pals in her journal as she searches for happiness. Renee's work in the beloved romantic comedy earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress, and critics and audiences alike loved the movie, an updated take on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." It earned more than $280 million at the box office and spawned two sequels — "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" in 2004 and "Bridget Jones's Baby" in 2016. A third sequel is reportedly in the works.

We're looking back at some of the best TV series based on books…
When Netflix debuted "Bridgerton," the historical drama series executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Chris Van Dusen, in December 2020, it was an instant hit — Netflix's most streamed show ever at the time, in fact.
The project is based on author Julia Quinn's popular romance novel series that follows the exploits of the aristocratic Bridgerton family as they navigate love, gossip and scandal on the marriage market in Regency-era London. While season 1, based on "The Duke and I," chronicled eldest Bridgerton daughter Daphne's hunt for a husband, season 2 — which is based on "The Viscount Who Loved Me" and debuted in 2022 — followed eldest brother Anthony's attempts to find a wife worthy of being his viscountess. Season 3, which airs in 2024, follows brother Colin Bridgerton and his friendship-turned-more with neighbor Penelope Featherington. A fourth season is also in the works.

The 2024 Apple TV+ period comedy-drama series "Palm Royale" is very loosely based on the 2018 novel "Mr. & Mrs. American Pie" by Juliet McDaniel. Major details and plot points have been reinvented for the gorgeous and fun TV version, which features "Saturday Night Live" icon Kristen Wiig as Maxine Simmons, a former pageant queen who's an ambitious new resident of Palm Beach, Florida, desperate to break into high society with her handsome husband Douglas, an airline pilot. The show, which is set in 1969, also stars some incredible talents — from Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Leslie Bibb as society snobs to Ricky Martin as a connected country club server to Laura Dern as a smart, savvy feminist with a surprise connection to those in power.

Following its debut at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, Hulu's "Normal People" was a hit among streaming audiences.
Based on Sally Rooney's 2018 novel of the same name, the drama chronicles the fraught romantic relationship between Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) from adolescence into adulthood. "Normal People" garnered widespread critical acclaim: Paul earned an Emmy nomination for best lead actor in 2020, and Daisy and the show both earned Golden Globe nominations in 2021.
_
The 2023 Apple TV+ series "The Buccaneers" is based on Edith Wharton's unfinished novel of the same name, which was published posthumously in 1938. The historical drama centers around a group of American débutantes — played by Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Kristine Frøseth, Aubri Ibrag and Imogen Waterhouse — looking for love in London, where their modern sensibilities are at odds with the traditions of English high society in the 1870s.
_
Say it together: Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose! Critically acclaimed sports drama series "Friday Night Lights" debuted in 2006, two years after the 1990 H. G. Bissinger nonfiction novel of the same name was adapted into a film. While the book delves into the 1988 season of the Permian Panthers high school football team in Odessa, Texas, the series centers on the small football town of Dillon, Texas, home of the Dillon Panthers. The show's five seasons explore the lives of the young athletes and the adults in their orbit with particular emphasis on coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and wife Tammy (Connie Britton) plus players brought to life by Zach Gilford, Taylor Kitsch, Gaius Charles and more as well as their closest companions, who are played by Jesse Plemons, Minka Kelly and Adrianne Palicki.
_
The 2024 Max series "The Girls on the Bus" is inspired by the 2018 book "Chasing Hillary" by political reporter Amy Chozick, who co-created and executive produced the comedy-drama series after years of covering politicians including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
It centers on four female journalists, both liberal and conservative — beautifully played by Melissa Benoist, Carla Gugino, Christina Elmore and Natasha Behnam — who work for different outlets. It chronicles their different approaches to their jobs as they compete for scoops and struggle to balance their personal lives with their professional ambitions as they follow presidential candidates on the campaign trail.
_
The epic fantasy series "Game of Thrones," which was adapted from George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, kept fans hooked over its eight seasons thanks to the wild storylines and an incredible ensemble cast that included Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. While the HBO series might have stuck to its source material in earlier seasons, writers eventually took more creative liberties as they ran out of books to adapt. "GoT" hit a major milestone in 2018 — it became the winningest drama series in Primetime Emmy history.
_
Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall star in the 2024 Netflix series "One Day," which is based on David Nicholls' 2009 novel of the same name, as well as the 2011 movie of the same name starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. The show chronicles the events in Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew's lives that take place every July 15 — from the day they first met in 1988 — as they grow up, grow close, move apart and experience both joy and heartbreak.
_
The series "The Queen's Gambit," which debuted on Netflix in 2020 and later won 11 Emmys, is a period drama based on the 1983 Walter Tevis novel of the same name. The seven-episode show stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Elizabeth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy who desires to become the world's best competitor. On her quest for success, however, we learn of Elizabeth's emotional struggles and issues with drugs and alcohol. Anya won a best actress Golden Globe and a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a miniseries or television movie for her performance on the show.

Inspired by Nelson Johnson's nonfiction book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City," the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" — which won 20 Emmys including two for best drama over its five season run between 2010 and 2014 — follows the life of mobster-politician Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi), who runs Atlantic City during the Prohibition era of the '20s. According to the author, the writers behind the HBO series were "doing their best to do historically accurate fiction." While it hits the mark in terms of atmosphere, there are aspects of the show that are more fiction than fact.
_
The 2024 Peacock series "Apples Never Fall" is based on Liane Moriarty's 2021 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name.
It focuses on the picture-perfect Delaney family, which is led by former coaches Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening), who are looking forward to retirement after selling their successful tennis academy in Florida. But when Joy suddenly disappears, her four adult children (played by Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner and Essie Randles) find themselves questioning their parents' marriage as dark family secrets start surfacing.
_
"Conversations with Friends," which is based on Sally Rooney's novel of the same name, debuted on Hulu in 2022. It follows Frances (Alison Oliver), a cerebral college student and writer who performs spoken-word pieces with her confident and popular ex-girlfriend, Bobbie (Sasha Lane), in Dublin, Ireland. Their friendship is tested when they start spending time with Melissa (Jemima Kirke), an older writer who's married to handsome but quietly tortured actor Nick (Joe Alwyn). As Frances and Nick embark on an unexpected affair, Bobbi and Melissa explore a flirtation, leading to thrilling, heartbreaking and complicated emotional consequences.
_
"The Lincoln Lawyer" is a legal drama series created by Emmy-winning writer-producer David E. Kelley that's based on author Michael Connelly's 2008 novel "The Brass Verdict." The show stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller (who was portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in the 2011 movie of the same name), a Los Angeles-based defense attorney who works out of his Lincoln. The Netflix series debuted in 2022 and season 2 dropped in 2023.
_
Inspired by Liane Moriarty's 2014 novel of the same name, HBO's "Big Little Lies" follows the complicated lives of the Monterey Five (played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz), who become involved in a murder investigation. The show, which explores themes of toxic masculinity and female relationships, was met with critical acclaim and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards over two seasons, which aired from 2017 to 2019.
While its writers added depth to the world, the storyline, characters and dialogue were derived directly from Liane's novel. There have also been significant changes, one of them being the show's setting — it was switched from a fictional Australian beach town to Monterey, California. "I thought the Californian setting was beautiful and very similar to the Australian setting I'd imagined. In a way, I think changing the setting helped me 'let go,' which I think every author has to do when their work is adapted," Liane told ELLE in 2017. "If it had been set in Australia, I might have resisted changes to the book, which I've always known and understood were necessary in an adaptation."

Based on the Sherryl Woods book series of the same name, Netflix's "Sweet Magnolias" follows the personal and professional lives of childhood friends in the charming Southern town of Serenity, South Carolina. The series, which debuted in 2020, stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend, a mom of three navigating divorce, learning to love again and starting a new business with her besties. Season 3 premiered in 2023 and a fourth season is in the works.
_
When "Outlander" debuted on Starz in 2014, fans of the Diana Gabaldon-penned book series on which it's based watched in droves. The historical series follows nurse-turned-surgeon Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who inadvertently time travels from post-World War II Scotland to 1743, where she finds herself married to respected Highlands warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), with whom she soon falls in love. After enduring war, violence and trauma, they're forced to split when it becomes imperative that Claire return to her own time period. Decades later, they find their way back to one another across space and time — and to a new land where war once again threatens their union and those they love most. The TV show will conclude with an eighth and final season likely in 2025.
_
Who knew Dan Humphrey could be so creepy? The first season of "You," which is based on the 2014 novel written by Caroline Kepnes, focuses on the life of Joe Goldberg ("Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley), a New York City bookstore manager who falls deeply (and terrifyingly) in love with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), a woman who randomly walks into his shop. What unfolds is a dangerous, obsessive pursuit to keep Guinevere all to himself — even if that means killing the people closest to her. A fifth and final season is set to debut in 2024.
_
Based on the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, "The Handmaid's Tale" focuses on the totalitarian state of Gilead, where fertile women are viewed as property. The series, which stars Elisabeth Moss, premiered in 2017. While the critically acclaimed book might have been the show's source material earlier on, the writers have since made the decision to keep the series going well past its original narrative. A sixth and final season is expected to air in 2025.
_
"The Witcher," which is based on the Andrzej Sapkowski book series of the same name, debuted on Netflix in 2019 with Henry Cavill in the title role as reclusive monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. The fantasy epic series chronicles his experience navigating the world and the wicked — and wonderful — people around him. Henry starred on the first three seasons. Liam Hemsworth takes over the role of Geralt for season 4.
_
It's not often that a series comes along and changes the TV landscape, but that's exactly what "Orange Is the New Black" did. Based on Piper Kerman's memoir "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison," the show — which in 2013 became Netflix's first hit television series — explores Piper's experiences at a minimum-security federal correctional facility. In an effort to juxtapose the privileged experience of the main character (Piper is played by Taylor Schilling), the show incorporates dynamic characters who have been mistreated by the justice system.
_
Interested in all things true crime? Consider adding "Mindhunter" to your watchlist. Based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker's 1995 true crime novel "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit," the Netflix psychological crime series chronicles FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as well as psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) as they work to gain a better understanding of what it means to be a serial killer. The first season of the show takes place between 1977 to 1980, while the second season is set between 1980 and 1981.
_
Based on Stephanie Land's 2019 memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive," Netflix's "Maid" made its debut on the streamer in 2021. Margaret Qualley portrays Alex, a single mom who, after escaping an abusive relationship, gets a job as a cleaner to make ends meet. The series earned critical acclaim and a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
_

_

_
Stelena and Delena fans unite! Following its debut on The CW in 2009, "The Vampire Diaries" quickly became a fan favorite among teens. The drama based on L.J. Smith's book series of the same name chronicles the life of Mystic Falls teenager Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) as she navigates the supernatural horrors of her small town and finds herself caught in an enthralling love triangle with two disparate vampire brothers — selfless and brooding Stefan Salvatore (played by Paul Wesley) and rule-breaking bad boy Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). The series wrapped in 2017 after eight seasons.
_
Based on the Celeste Ng novel of the same name, "Little Fires Everywhere" follows the interwoven lives of two mothers from disparate socioeconomic backgrounds. The series, which is set in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in the late '90s, revolves around Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon), a wealthy white mother and reporter, and Mia Warren (Kerry Washington), a black single mother and struggling artist. While the series delves into racial politics, its source material was less forthright. "The book really does delve into class and sociopolitical differences and cultural differences, so I think adding the level of race to that really enriches the storytelling," said Reese at the Television Critics Association panel in 2020. "We are stepping away from this binary idea we have of race in this country — of black and white — because we're also dealing with Asian American identity and immigrant identity."
_
2021's "Nine Perfect Strangers," which is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name by Liane Moriarty, stars Nicole Kidman as a mysterious wellness retreat director who's on a mission to get nine strangers on a path to better living, but things take a darker turn.

As more details surrounding their deaths come to light, Camille finds that she has more in common with the victims than she realized.
_
Following its debut in 2017, Netflix's "13 Reasons Why" sparked controversy. Based on Jay Asher's 2007 novel of the same name, the drama executive produced by Selena Gomez follows teenager Clay Jensen as he copes with the tragic death of his friend, Hannah Baker. Clay comes to realize that prior to her death, Hannah left a series of cassette tapes that detail the reasons why she decided to end her life. On them, she also addresses the people she holds responsible for her decision. The series led by stars Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford went on for four seasons until 2020.
_
Over the course of its five-year run, "The Magicians" amassed a loyal fan base. Based on the 2009 Lev Grossman novel of the same name, the Syfy fantasy series follows a graduate student at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), who comes to realize that the mythical world he read about in books as a child is real and poses a serious threat to the rest of mankind. The show ran from 2015 to 2020.
_
The delightfully addictive teen show "Gossip Girl" was adapted from the Cecily von Ziegesar book series of the same name. The series focuses on the luxurious lives of privileged teens living on Manhattan's Upper East Side. When former party girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) returns home following a mysterious absence, she's reunited with best frenemy Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and their mutual object of affection, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford). Narrated by a mischievous blogger known as "Gossip Girl" (Kristen Bell), the series packs a juicy, dramatic punch. The show was such a hit that a revival series based on the original, which concluded in 2012, debuted on HBO Max in 2021.
_
"Clarice," which is based on Thomas Harris's "The Silence of the Lambs" book and stars Rebecca Breeds in the title role, is set in 1993 and picks up a year after the events in the film. The series — which ran for one season on CBS in 2021 — chronicles Clarice Starling's professional and personal life as she continues her harrowing investigation into serial killers and predators.
_
While Candace Bushnell is best known for her "Sex and the City" series, she also penned "The Carrie Diaries," the prequel to the famed HBO show that was the inspiration for the 2012 coming-of-age series. Set in the early '80s, "The Carrie Diaries" follows a teenage Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) as she works tirelessly to bring her dreams of becoming a writer to fruition, all while dealing with family, friendships, high school and romance. The show — a delight to watch from the big hair and shoulder pads to mentions of Andy Warhol and Interview Magazine — serves as both an effective origin story and a love letter to a cherished time of the past. In 2013, Candace gushed about AnnaSophia's portrayal of Carrie. "Sometimes I'm just taken aback. Like, wow, that is in a sense a young Sarah Jessica Parker," she told CBS News, referencing the actress who brought adult Carrie to life first. "I know we think of a young Sarah Jessica Parker as very different, because she was in Square Pegs. But if Sarah Jessica Parker had played a 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw, I see the connection."
It also starred future Oscar nominee Austin Butler as Carrie's love interest, bad boy Sebastian Kydd.
_
Based on the William Landay novel of the same name, "Defending Jacob" follows the lives of the Barber family as they deal with an accusation that their 14-year-old son has committed murder. _
The charmingly dark children's novels from author Daniel Handler, who wrote under the pen name Lemony Snicket, were given the Hollywood treatment on the big screen in 2004 and on the small screen in 2017. Netflix's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" series follows the three Baudelaire orphans (played by Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and Presley Smith), whose lives are upended when they're forced to live with malicious guardian Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris). As with many adaptations, the show includes both major and minor deviations from the source material, like Lemony's increased involvement, Sunny's punny baby gibberish and the addition of musical numbers.
_
By the show's conclusion, it was hard to believe that it was actually a book adaptation. "Pretty Little Liars," which ran from 2010 to 2017, is based on the young adult book series by Sara Shepard and follows the lives of Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) and Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) — members of a clique led by queen bee Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse). After Alison mysteriously disappears, the girls begin receiving anonymous text messages from "A" threatening to expose secrets only she would know. It goes without saying, but the ABC Family series, which ran for seven seasons, frequently deviated from its source material.
_
The HBO sci-fi series "Westworld," which is based on the 1973 novel by Michael Crichton, is set at an elite theme park where visitors who can afford to enter are allowed to indulge their deepest fantasies without suffering any consequences. Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Anthony Hopkins and James Marsden are among the show's star-studded cast. It debuted in 2016 and wrapped in 2022.
_
"The Wheel of Time," which is based on the Robert Jordan novel series of the same name and premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021, stars Golden Globe-winning actress Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a member of an influential organization of women who can wield magic. _
2005's "Looking for Alaska" was the first novel written by John Green, and it became a Hulu TV show in 2019. The limited series, which is set in 2005, explores the complexities of coming of age through the perspective of Miles "Pudge" Halter (Charlie Plummer). As a new student at Culver Creek Boarding School, Pudge pursues a "Great Perhaps," develops a core group of friends and falls in love with Alaska Young (Kristine Froseth). The show differs from the book in that it candidly explores issues faced by teens in this generation — mental health, consent, sexuality and race — making for a sharper, more emotional story.
_
"The Baby-Sitters Club," which is based on the Ann M. Martin book series of the same name, debuted on Netflix in 2020. The show, which ran for two seasons, chronicles the everyday lives and shenanigans of a group of middle school babysitters in the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Sophie Grace, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph and Malia Baker star in this youthful adaptation.
_
Peacock's "One of Us Is Lying," based on Karen M. McManus's 2017 novel of the same name, follows the investigation surrounding the suspicious death of a student on school premises. When five students go into detention and only four walk out alive, the survivors are individually looked at as prime suspects in the developing murder case. The series debuted on the streamer in 2021 and concluded in 2022 after its second season.
_
2020's "The Outsider" is an HBO crime-drama miniseries based on the 2018 Stephen King novel of the same name. The series delves into the grisly murder of an 11-year-old boy — a homicide committed by an experienced cop. When a dangerous supernatural entity becomes involved in the investigation, more questions are brought to light. Showrunner Richard Price wasn't afraid to stray away from the source material — the pilot episode alone covers about a third of the book.
_
Lindy West's endearing 2016 memoir "Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman" was the inspiration behind this beloved Hulu series of the same name. Starring Aidy Bryant as Annie Easton, "Shrill" follows an overweight 20-something who wants to make changes in her life — excluding her body. While the world views her as inadequate because of her weight, she begins to realize that she's good enough just the way she is. Its third and final season debuted in 2021.
_
"Shadow and Bone" is a Netflix Original Series based on the Grisha Trilogy written by Leigh Bardugo. This fantasy series, which was released in 2021, follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young mapmaker who is conspired against by evil forces after she unlocks a mystical power that could revolutionize life as she knows it.

It's the Pop-Tarts origin story we didn't know we needed.
The new movie "Unfrosted" — a comedy co-written and directed by Jerry Seinfeld, who also stars — is loosely based on the true story of the competition between Kellogg's and Post to create a breakfast pastry in the '60s.
The Netflix film — which debuted on May 3 — is chock-full of wackiness as well as a killer cast loaded with A-list comedy stars including not only Seinfeld but also Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Maria Bakalova, Max Greenfield, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, Christian Slater and Hugh Grant.
The logline for the new movie reads like this: "Michigan, 1963. Kellogg's and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, 'Unfrosted' stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld."

Iconic Vermont jam band Phish commanded the stage at the Sphere in Las Vegas for four nights beginning April 18, delivering not only incredible music — more than 68 songs in total — but a mind-blowing visual concert that left 20,000 fans each night in awe.
"As Phish fans well know, in their 40 years of being a band," the Sphere explained, "Phish has never played the same show twice. Each of Phish's four shows at Sphere [featured] completely unique setlists AND visuals, making every show a truly once-in-a-lifetime audio-visual experience."
And more are in store: According to the $2.3 billion immersive arena, "These shows mark the beginning of a new relationship between Phish and Sphere, but they will be the only shows Phish performs at the venue in 2024."

"#Phish at the #Sphere," he shared on X alongside a video clip from the psychedelic light show. "I swear I just talked to God. I would give you all my money, stick my d*** in a blender and swear off p**** for the rest of my life in exchange for this. Bro I met God tonight for real. I feel like I just got saved by Jesus no lie."
